That's just it: the application is everything. They are a good platform for sound sculpting.
You are right about the 300-Series ESP/Ltd guitars too. They offered a lot of bang for the buck. I still have three of them, two basses and one guitar. The basses are still rock solid after many years of hard use and they have more than paid for themselves many times over. I'm always on the lookout for more.
