  • SD mV Pickup Ratings Reference

Since I'm spec'ing out a neck humbucker, I dug up my reference material and found this info which was posted by Scott Olson years ago.

It is the millivolts rating of each SD pickup to that point (around 2014-ish):

That list was kind of debunked shortly after, if you read the thread.

Consider this. Think these are real numbers?

      Debunked by whom?

Perhaps for those particular pickups ("666 mV"), however, they are in the realm of possibility.

Even if those Nazgul ratings were a joke, how do you dismiss the rest of the huge list?

I highly doubt Scott Olson (SD's former Media Manager) would try to pull our legs; let alone waste all of his time coming up with a completely spoof list.

I own and have owned a handful of those pickups, and judging the audible output of each compared to the list mV rating, I'd say the list is true - evil demonic influences or not.

...a problem being that a same passive pickup might deliver a variable output in mV as soon as we change cable capacitance...

          For instance, for a P.A.F. replica, my experimental data state a peak voltage of 440mV through a short 220pF cable, 460mV through a 20' / 950pF one and 550mV through 30' / 1400pF (!).

Pretty logical knowing how high capacitance brings the resonant peak (= maximum voltage) towards the mids while low capacitance drowns it among high harmonics. But to take in account IMHO.

Now, many measurements done here through a standard cable are close to those stated above. For example, my archives mention 721mV for a SH4, rated in the first post @ 737mV. :-)

Isn't this the same list as the one in the third sticky thread in the Pickup Lounge channel?

Several years ago, experiments were done to get mV output values from many pickups available at that time. I don't know if this list will help anyone, as the output numbers never stay constant, but it might be interesting if you are comparing one pickup next to another. Since it was originally posted on this forum by an SD

Those ratings are complete bs. You think an Invader neck with 3 double thick ceramics is cooler than a Pearly Gates neck with a single A2?

I've no dog in the fight but for the record, an Invader neck is meant to include a series capacitor between coils. That kind of extra component can certainly affect the measured output voltage (although it also depends on how this voltage is measured). ;-)

I do know that when this was done, they worked pretty hard on it, devising a system where 1 note was played at a consistent volume. Of course guitar isn't played like that, but some info is better than none of it.

I'd like to think that. I don't think it was a spoof list, but it has obvious inaccuracies. But keep in mind he was the Marketing guy, in charge of Facebook, not an engineer in the lab doing the evaluation. I'd rather hear this information from someone closer to the experiment.

The Sticky does note a lot of what they did to try and keep the test environment consistent. But they were swapping out pickups in a guitar, so that would be challenging.

Yep, it was undoubtedly a metric ****-ton of work getting all of those readings.

And for that, I am appreciative of their tremendous effort here.

I don't look at it as 100% pure accuracy given the variables in such a task, but it's good enough and far more detailed than "TMB graph" or even "DC Output".
