Custom Custom vs. '78

CAn't speak to the 78, but my understanding is that it is a VH PAF style.

The CC, which I am personally familiar with in Les Pauls and Strat styles, should do what you want just fine. Don't be afraid to adjust the treble poles to get what you need there.

^ THIS. I have a CC in my Jackson, but it's a standard spacing version. The outside strings were a bit murky and weak, so I adjusted the screw poles in a 'smile' kind of setup, opposite of the neck curve, and it totally leveled the sound across all strings and made them equal in output. Amazing how well the Custom line works in any/every situation.
