    Concept Jazz neck?

Concept JB is also wound a bit hotter. Most examples fall in the 16.8K to 17K range vs 16.4K for the standard JB.

Mojotone vs. Philadelphia Luthier Tools magnets

We need not look any further than the Custom, the Custom 5, and the Custom Custom to understand how much a simple magnet change can influence a pickup's overall sound and feel...

    Concept Jazz neck?

The "Concept" neck is pretty much a standard Jazz neck with a roughcast magnet, as Beau suggested. The "Concept" bridge, on the other hand, has bigger differences compared to a regular JB.

    So pickups for this?

Wait...Angus Young style guitar and no one's mentioning the High Voltage set, especially now that they're "production" models?

Mojotone vs. Philadelphia Luthier Tools magnets

I think it's important to differentiate "subgrades" from the concepts of "quality" or "consistency". Most bar magnets are of sufficient quality and consistency. You're not likely to see earth-shattering differences between batches of the same magnet type, though every product allows a certain...

Mojotone vs. Philadelphia Luthier Tools magnets

I would shoot a message to both vendors and just ask about their QC for magnetized bars...do they buy them pre-charged or do they magnetize them in-house? Do they have a way to double-check the gauss/charge before shipping? Hint: I know Mojotone does. As for magnet "quality" from a...

    Pearly Gates parallel?

Because the PG neck is a very low output, low inductance pickup, you basically end up with a VERY anemic tone in parallel, similar to an underwound or tapped single coil. Split is a bit better, since it only halves the resistance and inductance, but then you're fighting hum. @CarlosG, if you...

    Basswood as a Stratwood

This very thread highlights the issue with trying to generalize the "tone" of specific wood types...you can't. In less than a dozen posts, we've pinned "basswood" as: 1) Dull and warm 2) Bright and meaty 3) Bright and tight 4) Less low end with upper mid push 5) Big, solid low end, yet super...

    Basswood as a Stratwood

I agree that basswood is quite soft and not much to look at on its own, but that doesn't mean it's "bad" in any sense, not even close. Ibanez tends to use thick sealer coats and finishes on their basswood bodies, but I've owned and played many basswood guitars, including lots of Ibanez', and...

The pros & cons of alder?

;) Like most young, naïve players, I started out in the guitar scene assuming that all the marketing (and subsequent "group think" on early internet forums) which insisted that the wood a guitar is made from was the most important factor to "tone"...was true. Even when I formally joined this...

    Adjusting my humbuckers height

I don't set pickups to a standard height. It makes sense as a "setup" step if you're a manufacturer striving for consistency in the factory, but predetermined heights are rarely a "best fit" for everyone. As for which side to put closer to the strings, that depends on what you're after...
