1 man black metal project lol

OH THE DOUBLE THICK GLAZE!
I'm bad at serious singing so thought may as well do some black metal. I played everything. My squeaky Alesis electric drum kit. Turned the gain and treble all the way up and the bass all the way down for the guitar haha.

Well that's a fair bit away from learning Chet Atkins.
Good job.:)

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Hehe thanks. I always play clean unless I'm recording.

How long to put it together?
Or was it drink some coffee and get at it?

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

I worked on the instrumental parts about 5 hours yesterday. I tried to put down the drum tracks first to a metronome but drums are my weakest instrument (besides vox) and it didn't groove once I tried to lay other tracks down. So I did the bass first to a metronome then the drums. Took many takes. Then the guitar was a little easier. Today I spent about 3 hours writing lyrics and deciding how I wanted to organize the vox and then did 1 take of the vox. I was like I'm not subjecting the neighbors to any more of this than I have to haha.

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Neighbor, baa, let them give you the "what the heck is wrong with that guy look" for a while. Keeps em guessing.
Your drums sound way better than I can manage.

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Haha thanks, good advice. I quit drums periodically out of frustration, nice to be gettin a little better.

Well I would make the drums a tad louder, also get some reverb on those guitars as they don’t fill enough space IMO,
I’m not going to throw stones at your vocals as I can’t sing but maybe mix it a little quieter so it supports the instruments rather than the other way round.

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Hmm, sounds like black metal by way of cock rock. You may have invented a new sub genre! (Just what metal needs lol)

The mix could use some dank reverb gluing everything together ... I would try a plate or hall reverb with a fairly short predelay and roll off everything above 5-6k.

The mix balance sounds like the ‘pyramid’ hierarchy, where each new element added is louder than the preceding one because it is placed ‘on top’ of the other tracks as opposed to being mixed ‘into’ the tracks. That’s how you end up with vocals (usually the last element added) being super loud. It’s also why a valid and popular mix strategy is to mix the kick and vocals first and build around that foundation. You can get a surprisingly solid mix by starting with vocal and kick, adding bass, then guitars, panning to taste, then walking away. :)

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Thanx for the mixing advice, I appreciate it. Thought about adding reverb to the master track. I'll try doing that or to the guitars and see what happens. I guess I could record another track for just kick. A lot of my favorite black metal cds have instruments louder or quieter than others like Darkthrone Transylvanian Hunger where the drums are quiet. Not gonna be defensive tho, it's a good opportunity to work on my mixing.

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Oh yeah, everything was peaking including the drums. Should I compress them then turn them up or turn everything else down?

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Sounds as good as any black metal I've heard :)

TO is right about it being a new subgenre. Less rhythm to the rhythm guitars and more picking as fast as possible.

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

Sounds like it may be a gain staging issue. When you say 'peaking' what do you mean?

Re: 1 man black metal project lol

^ The drum track was going into the red while still not that loud. I think it was just the snare. I said eff it and just turned it up and its not clipping. I also turned some other stuff down, copied the guitar and panned them left and right with reverb on 1 of them.

Thanks! Yeah, maybe me trying to get the rhythms as good as possible backfired. If I can get some more chaotic rhythms in there it might sound less cock rocky.

That sounds a lot better IMO
