I'm looking for a new speaker for my good ole' Princeton. I have a Kendrick 10'
Blackframe in now. Love the vintage tone of the Kendrick,But I need to get
more volume/clean headroom from it. I'm on a fixed income, So price is a
factor. Which 10 inch speaker would you pick?

Don't scrimp on tone by going for anything other than a great speaker.

If you want high efficiency and a great tone, get the speaker that Ted Weber used to call the C10Q...he has another number for it now. It has nothing in commen with a Jensen C10Q...those use a little magnet. The Weber C10Q uses the huge magnet of a C10N and sounds awesome in a blackface Fender amp. It sounds like my favorite ceramic magnet 10" speaker, the '66 Jensen C10N. You need to know whether you need a 4 ohm or 8 ohm speaker, BTW. My tweed Princeton uses a 4 ohm speaker as does the Champ. I don't know what yours uses but you need to get it right. Lew

Re: 10' Speaker for Princeton Reverb

First I want to say I'm envious my dad and I have both wanted a Princeton reverb for a VERY long time. They are true gems.

That said I really like my Dr. Z 10. I'm not sure of the price but it sounds very thick and rich clean or distorted. I'm not the biggest fan of speaker breakup and if this one does it it is so smooth I can't tell! Here is info taken right off the website.

I have developed my own 10 inch speaker, it will be incorporated in the new 2X10 Ghia combo, the Z-28 4X10, the 4X10 open back cab, and the MAZ -38 and Jr. 2X10 reverb combo's. I utilized a process that I learned from my friend Ted Weber at Weber VST: that is incorporate the response of a sample speaker, them tweak the voice coil, mag circuit, and dust cap to achieve a optimum design. On the Z 10 inch speaker, I utilize an English made cone and voice coil, along with a basket and magnet from Eminence, and assemble them in house. I select a different dust cap depending on the amp that I install them in. There has been a lot of time in the development of this speaker, but I 'm very happy with the results, it gives me control of the speakers tone, and no delays for speaker deliveries.

Lew likes one of the weber 10's and I have started to become a weber fan of late.

Cool! I like a few of the Weber 10's actually, but Ted changed all the numbers a year or two ago!

My favorite Webers are:

P10RT...still the best '59 Jensen P10R inspired speaker I've ever used!

P10Q 30 watt....much nicer, warmer,, rounder tone, IMO, than Ted's stock P10Q, which has to much "snap" for my ears.

C10Q...much better, heavier speaker than the Jensen Reissue C10Q or vintage C10Q from ANY YEAR. It's more like a '65 or '66 C10N Fender used in the very finest sounding Vinrolux Reerb Amps. Great speaker!

Re: 10' Speaker for Princeton Reverb

I am leaning to the Weber (8 ohms BTW ) Another point brought up in this
thread is Dust caps ? Weber gives you 3 to pick from? Whats the difference?

Re: 10' Speaker for Princeton Reverb

Well, assuming it's a 10", then it's tough to beat Weber's 10F150T in a Princeton. That was Ted's recommendation for my SF Princeton a couple of years ago, and it sounds great. It's pretty affordable, too. It boosted the bass and sweetened the mids and highs, kicked up the volume level a bit, and delivered very good headroom (the amp distorts before the speaker does). Tough to beat.

I have a cheapo ceramic magnet Carvin in mine and it's great. It's one of the best Princetons I've heard.
