12 Strings guitars, what are the choices?

Re: 12 Strings guitars, what are the choices?

I'm sure we all do, but I don't have the coin for a guitar that costs 3x's what I paid for my most expensive axe, that I'd play 15% of the time. :)

Unless there's been a massive price increase over the past 2 years, they'll be right at $1000 for a 330/12. That's not bad for a quality instrument that will last you the rest of your life...

Oh wow, that isn't that bad! For some reason I thought they were $1600+

Well on ebay I found a 330 6stringer identical to mine for $1700 a few months ago, so I don't know exactly what is going on.

I got it for like $980.

I think there might be a waiting list to get anything new from rickenbacker, so used models are fetching more due to demand for the instrument NOW and not a year from now.

The retail is very high for rickenbackers but if you search enough you can find them second hand (mint condition) for alot cheaper and they'll last forever if you look after them. Also maybe find shops struggling to sell rickenbackers (as they arent incredibely popular) you may be able to get a deal like my dad did when he got a discontinued 360C64 (6 string black version of the harrison model) for more then half off.

I will say - don't go cheap on any 12string; even an electric, but especially an acoustic or semi. all those extra strings just add up to twice the tuning hassle and half the lifespan without serious work.

Wow!

It's been a while I haven't been around. Wouldn't have thought one of my thread was still live.

Thanks for the input bros. Aceman, I think your post express the voice of the wise. I was starting to think that if I was to have a 12 string guitar, I should go (in some years time) custom made. Kind of Gretsch-like for less, but still high specs.

Another long term project I guess. Money money money!

All I know is that I'd absolutely love to have one of these Gretsch Limited Edition Amber 6122-12's:

Whatever you get, if it is an electric try flatwounds and use compression.

You can find good deals on used Rics from time to time.
