12ax7.......12at7

can i replace a 12ax7 with a 12at7 or is that just stupid? I'm looking to get a little less gain in my marshall jcm2000...... just a little more then a blusy gain. I wanna be able to push it to without getting that almost distortion sound. and i already have my gain at less then half. It needs tubes replaced really bad anyhow and i'm shopping for tubes. I came across electro harmonix 12ax7eh's but i read they we're really high gain.

You can use the 12at7 as a replacement. I personally have not had luck with that particular swap. The preamp gain gets lowered but the amp also loses some dynamics (in regard to other amps I have swapped tubes on - not sure about the 2000).

The Sovtek 12ax7LPS is a very nice tube that hifi freaks like also. It has good headroom, bass and clarity.

I used a 12 at7 to good effect on a boogie f-30 to lower the gain of the lead channel. It will give you more headroom and a cleaner overall sound.

I'm debating wheather i should just get Electro Harmonix 12AX7EH's and crank them at low gain.

i use all EH's in the preamp & love it, but then again it's a silverface bassman

I'd say just get 1, put it in v1, try your theory, and if you like it, you're set, if not, you're not out as much money
