NSD: Electro-Harmonix 12" speakers

Usually tape is used on the grille to mark mic placement. Not sure that would help mic angle much but, fractions of an inch can count. It actually helps to move the mic around as you play, which is why plugins are so fun. Like a voice in a fan effect until you find the tone you want. You're basically sweeping an EQ by another means.

I haven't tested it myself, but I heard the tape actually affects the sound slightly even if it's not directly in front of the mic. It makes sense, though. Different thickness grill cloths sound different, so you're kinda doing that to an extent with the tape.

I just use a sharpie and mark a dot where I like each speaker mic'd
I've never found anything off axis to be of any benefit in my humble experiences.
Usually my favorite tones are just at the inside edge of the dust caps on most speakers. I like them a touch brighter than most.

This made me think too. My cabs don't have cloth. They're mesh grilles.

Basically this but the straight version (even the same head):

And this but very beat up. I forgot about the silver accents. That's a nice cab.

Drawback to the Carvin cab: playing it 100% volume 100% gain did blow a speaker once, which Carvin replaced for free.

As far as I know the cab dimensions closely match a 1960A/B within a half inch or so. I think it weighed 35 lbs.

Ok so in a response to the original thread about the EHX speaker
and to the very lat post about a Carvin speaker

I just got an unloaded convertible HB Plus Vertical 2x12

I loaded it with the Carvin VL12 8ohm in one space

And the EHX 12VR8 in the other

I set it to stereo
And I can plug into either speaker individually
And A-B them side by side with the same amp and settings , guitar just by moving the jack on the back of the cab

Shockingly I found this

The EHX has a bit of more mid range in the clean channel which I like

But with the gain channel that mid range became mud

The Carvin was much more clear with the high gain more articulate

I think I may test all my speakers this way

Right now I think I like the Carvin VL12 8ohm better

While the EHX 12VR8 speaker sounds fine clean

I think the Carvin VL12 8ohm sounds better under gain

The EHX is 75 watts
While the Carvin is 100 watts

But I am driving it with a 20 watt Joyo Zombie Bantamp

So it should still have headroom

Yeah. I always thought that logo was kinda funny/ugly, but it now occurs to me yeah, it's probably a caricature of Mike Matthews. That's actually kinda awkward in a cool way, I guess.

EHX pedals come with a battery with the guy's picture too. I think that's pretty funny.

They come stock in the Electro-Harmonix (Sovtek) Mig 50 cab's. which don't sound bad on YT...
I only see that cab with EHX 12TS8 30W speakers. I'm looking for an affordable and quite lightweight vertical 2x12" cab and this one got my interest. Anybody tried it?

I got the vertical 2x12 Harley Benton Plus cab unloaded for $145 plus Shipping ( $131)

it's awesome

you can get with v30s for about $100 more
