12aX7's vs. 12AT7's.

What are the basic differences between the tones these two types of tubes offer? I believe that the AT7's are lower gain and offer more headroom, but I'm not even sure if that's right.

Well.. out of a scale of 100%, the 12at7 provite about 60-75% of the gain found in 12ax7s.

12at7s are gonna sound smoother, sweeter and less gainy ofcourse.. 12ax7s arent the opposite of it but will have more gain and have more attack to them.

I guess thats the basic of them.

good luck,
Duke

Re: 12aX7's vs. 12AT7's.

I believe the 12at7 has about 60 or 70% of the gain of a 12ax7.

They are interchangable, but the 12ax7 will produce a much hotter signal...

I sometimes substitute a 12ax7 for the phase invertor tube in a blackface Fender...it pushes the amp harder. But the stock 12at7 sounds cleaner and best in that position for most music.

Re: 12aX7's vs. 12AT7's.

i remember reading somewhere that the 12at7 has a higher current handling capacity, and that's why it's good for reverb drivers and phase inverters.

hey Lew,
How would you compare an amp (the same one), but 1 has 12ax7s in the Phase Invertors and 1 has 12at7s in the phase invertors??

This would be for highgain situation.

thanks,
Duke

Like The only differences are gain, the headroom is an issue of the amp.
12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7,12AY7, and another I forget are all interchangeable, the only difference is gain, AX is the hottest, I think I have the gain order correct. I'd have to look that up, but any tube amp site should have it listed.
The difference tonally has to do with how the amp interacts with it, as the compression points are a bit different, but I couldn't tell you more specifically than that though. Also the 12 series the heaters can run off 12.6v or 6.3v, but most amps run them at 6.3v so they last longer. There are also some other odd balls that can be plugged in there as well, but you'd have to look that up on a tube site.

Re: 12aX7's vs. 12AT7's.

For the Duke of Metal,

Most Marshalls use the 12ax7 for the phase invertor...it's part of the reason Marshalls have a more aggressive "rock" tone than blackface Fenders. Most blackface and silverface Fender use the 12at7.

(That's the tube right next to the output tubes...usually)

I've played around with using a 12ax7 vs a 12at7 (and also a 5751) in old Marshalls, JCM 800 Marshalls, and my blackface Fenders.

Basically, in a blackface Fender, you get a cleaner, less grainy tone with the 12at7...and a slightly hotter, rougher, grainier, more easily overdriven tone with a 12ax7.
