#@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

Please explain the importance of shooting the first clear coats within 8 hours of the last paint coat. Could this be why my poly peeled last time? I waited several days before shooting the clear (it rained).

Yea, if the coat your shooting over is completely cured, there can be a problem of the next coat not bonding. I also worry about chemical incompatability, perhaps too much. Nonetheless, improving bonding from coat to coat is why it's reccomended that completely cured paint be scuffed first, or you get on it before it becomes too cured.

With most base-clear systems you can move to the clear coat as soon as the color coat is dry enough, usually about 15-20 minutes depending on the paint. You can shoot another clear coat over a clear coat, after it flashes what they call "hand slick". This usually takes about 12-15 minutes, but it depends on the paint and the conditions. You don't want too shoot again too soon, or if it's still too tacky, as that can cause problems of pin holes...ect.... With poly, they reccomend that the clear coat not be taped or buffed for at least 24 hours. Usually the color coats are considered free to tape after about 30 minutes.

Try to avoid shooting the clear if the tempature exceeds about 70* F. When it's too hot, the outer surface of a wet coat drys, before the solvants have evapoarted out from below, causing all kinds of problems. Also make sure there's enough ventalation that the solvants don't settle back down onto the surface of the top coat as it cures.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info - it's very helpful.

This thread is becoming vault-worthy IMO.

i too have fallen victim to poly peel. it happens when the paint and the poly are not compatible (as in spraying minwax[avoid this for most guitars!!!] on krylon). the easiest thing to do is use the tape to strip all of the poly off of the guitar using a bikini wax technique and start over with something made by the same brand as the rest of your paint job. and make sure that you follow the directions on the can!!!!!!!

This is what you get for buying your T-shirts at Walmart!

Any particular reason why you'd want to use poly over nitro? People say nitro is harder due to having to sand and buff a lot, but I've always found it pretty simple and really nice to work with.

Many reasons:

1. I can't go to the hardware store down the street and buy a can of it if I run out.

2. I'm not interested in the relic'd look. I want this guitar to look more or less the same for decades.

3. I don't buy the "better tone" BS.

Durability, easier to work with, faster cure time, just to name a few.

IIRC, nitro is also a heck of a lot more toxic to inhale than most poly coatings.

RD also made a good point regarding availability. For DIYs like us, nitro is not easy to come by, and more than likely has to be shipped. If I run out of nitro on my current project, I'm waiting a week for it to come from ReRanch. Poly is also considerably cheaper (about 1/2) than nitro.

You guys keep confusing hardware store poly with the automotive catalyzed poly...it's NOT the same. It's not cheap either, the good Dupont will run about $60.00 for the smallest quantity, but, you can shoot about 5 bodies with it. It is extremely TOXIC...way more than nitro, but either one is bad. Spray can poly is soft and IMO, takes months or longer to fully cure. Catalyzed will cure in hours, rock hard in a day or less...and I spray that over lacquers.
