I was very fortunate to receive a well worn and empty Marshall 1960A cab from a buddy of mine.
Don't really need a 4x12 very often anymore so I decided to convert it to a 1961 style 2x12. I like a big box 2x12 and what a great budget way to get one..
Cab had some moisture damage down along the front edge, a torn grill, missing most screws, it was pretty funky but solid.
I wanted to go with a Greenback-ish sound but with a little more power handling, I already had an Emi GB128 to put in, so I grabbed a used Emi Private Jack off Reverb to pair with it,. I picked up a yard of grill cloth from Amplified Parts and got to work. I cleaned it up a bit and then removed the front baffle. Filled the holes that were damaged on the cab and re-drilled them when I replaced the baffle. Stripped off the bad grill cloth after carefully removing the Marshall logo and 1960 badge. I took some scrap ply I had and cut two fillers for the holes I wouldn't be using and mounted them to the baffle. Grabbed a can of flat black spray paint and freshened the whole baffle up as well as spraying the 2 fill pieces. Recovering the baffle was way easier than I expecting. I used a power stapler with 1/4 staples and used a spring clamp to help hold it in position. Refitting the logo was a bit tricky til I realized the mounting holes go all the way thru so I used a drill bit to locate them on the front. I then slid the baffle back in the cab, screwed it down and mounted the speakers. I also built a new stand-off post for the back panel while I was at it and polished the cab handles up so they look new.
I wired it with 2 - 8ohm speakers in series for 16ohm. I got new black screws for the back panel with brass finishing washers, it looks pretty sharp but I don't have a pic. I haven't been able to find a replacement jack plate yet so I just cut some old scratched up vinyl and made a temp plate for now. Still need wheels too.
It sounds fantastic and looks great, used it for a gig Friday night and it worked perfectly!
