1971

Re: 1971

I have a major complaint about this...

I had played this three times already. And I went for the fourth time. And guess what -- soundclick decided to hate me, and now I cannot stream your tune anymore. At least right now. Bah!

That being said..

This is. Awesome.

!!

Love your playing. I seem to recall there was something around the 1:27 mark (well, there was something all over the track!), and it was just mmmmmmmmmm. Great stuff, Geoff -- as always!

Thanks Tor, I think the 1:27 mark was where I got my thumb caught under the strings and then a cat ran across my pedal board. Then I realized I don't even have a cat... I'll have to do that more often! Thanks for listening.

Well Whah ... all can I say WhahOW!!!!
The entire time I was in the zone of Mistreated/Catch the rainbow .... is that lovepedal you were talking about? if I was John Lord I would've given you a job vs. Morse.

Yeah, you got it Doc, in fact "Mistreated" was my initial motivation for this track, even though it came a few years after 1971! And yes, that's the Lovepedal Eternity, the one that Rid insisted is just another TubeScreamer! In particular, it is the white handwired '06 model Eternity, which is the highest gain of the bunch (he's made roughly a squillion different models of them!) and has this particular tone that I feel lends itself toward Ritchiedom. Here's a recent happy snap of it...and BTW, thank you for your most excellent compliment regarding Messrs Lord et al. And thanks for listening.

Uhm, yeah- that didn't suck :laugh2:

(FYI- thats a very big compliment from me- I tend to reserve it for an incredible meal or dessert or such, so my GF says)

Although the Blackmore thing seems most prominent (yay!- Huge Ritchie fan), I'm hearing a little Rory, and some Beck in places. Very cool track. Geoff I know your strat is "famous" around here, but I don't know the details- care to share? :)

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the compliment! You're definitely right about Blackmore and Beck, but I must confess that I haven't listened to enough Rory, although what I've heard has been inspiring! I would also put some Paul Kossoff into that mix as well.

My Strat is a '68 that I bought from the original owner, in quite good condition, in 1981 for AU$450. I was 19 at the time, and bought it as a spare "string breaker" emergency guitar, figuring it couldn't be as good as my relatively new (at the time) 25th Anniversary Strat. (Those horrible silver things) I didn't play it much until I broke a string mid-gig one night, and then I realized that it was probably a better guitar than I had any business owning at that point! The original pickups died in '85 and I replaced them with a set of Seymour Duncans, SSL-1 neck, SSL-1 RW/RP middle, and SSL-5 bridge. We've since done literally thousands of gigs together, and it is one very well traveled guitar. It has also outlasted 3 long term relationships, but has maintained its loyalty throughout! Jeff Healey played it for about 45 minutes onstage one night in the late 80's, when somebody brought him down to our cover gig. It's also been played by a few of my local heroes, including a guy named Ian Moss, who is one of my biggest influences. There's a very successful singer/guitarist here named Mark Lizotte, aka Diesel, and whenever we see each other he says, "I see the guitar first, then I see you." I had it refretted for the second time about 6 months ago. It just keeps getting better. Here are some pics that several forum members may be sick of seeing, but will put a face to the sound for you!

Wow

Great story and incredible pics and guitar. Thanks for sharing. Those late 60s big headstock strats like Ritchie's and Jimi's are my absolute fave. Curious if the refrets have been back to vintage size frets?

Yeah, many would say that they are the last of the truly rip-snorting Strats, although obviously there were plenty of good ones that came later, and plenty of barking dogs from that era as well! But it's wild to think that it is something that Jimi could have pulled out of the case new, restrung, played a gig with that night, and set fire to, in more ways than one.

I tend toward a fairly high action, and I use 11-49 in standard, so my preference is for chunkier frets than the original, and this last refret my guitar tech recommended these, which have a slightly raised crown. Under a microscope, they would be Mayan pyramid temple shaped! They really make chords ring out, which is always my main focus. But they're fun to dig into for soloing as well.

My tech put this series of shots of the refret up on his site, have a look through them, they're hard for me to look at! It's like guitar surgery, but she came back better than ever!

Re: 1971

Do I hear a pinch harmonic or two? :D

Beautiful playing, beautiful tone. :) As expected!

Thanks Curt, I'm trying to get my Zakk Wylde thing happening, I've just got to get my note to pinch harmonic ration up to 4:1, and then learn how to shred, and I think I'll be there.
