i have a 1986 lefty SG that has sat in its case since new, just changed out the original strings! my question is : the pick up rings say patent applied on them does any body know which PAF pick ups they are?

Re: 1986 gibson sg w/ paf`s

If the guitar was produced in 1986, and it is in all original condition, it seems curious that the pickups have a PAF sticker under them.

This might seem obvious, but PAF stands for Patent Applied For, and refers to the early years of humbucker making, when gibson had applied for a patent, which took some years to get. With that said, I was under the impression that PAFs were a thing of the 50-60s, certainly not going into the 80s, since the humbucker patent era was far gone.

Anyways, seems strange since you are claiming it to be all original. Pictures would help, and more knowledgeable forumites will surely chime in.

it says patent applied on the pick up rings in small silver letters I know it is all original I have owned it since new

Oh, the pick up rings... my bad, I read that wrong.

I'll have to bow out, and see if someone else can help you, as I have never seen that kind of marking on the rings.

Re: 1986 gibson sg w/ paf`s

I've heard that Tim Shaw pickups were "advertised" by having PAF stickers on the rings. But this practice started in 1980, and I sort of doubt it would still have been going on in 1986. And I thought the stickers had silver foil look to them instead of gold. Not 100% sure. I'd know if I could see them.

1) Is your SG really a 1986, or did you just buy a guitar that sat in the shop for years in 1986? What's the serial number? First 5 digits are all that matter.

2) Pictures are worth a 1000 words.

I have had it since 1987 the serial # says its a 1986 I bought it from the house of guitars in rochester ny it does have the little silver stickers on the rings

There is a good chance that it may be a set of Tim Shaw designed PAFs. If they are Shaws there will be a stamped patent number of 3,737,842. Most of Gibsons higher end guitars from about 1979 thru about 1987 were loaded with Shaws.

Seems odd to me the rings would be stickered and not the baseplates.

Anything special about these rings?
