1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

Stock single coils feature stud polepieces and underslung ceramic bar magnets. Humbucker not brilliant either.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

Not at all. Just bend 'em further.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

He says "original schaller floyd rose" but it looks like a licensed one to me.

$500 with a Fender case is an *okay* price.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

$500 in IMO at the top of the range. I would expect fairly mint for that kind of money.

Now, if you can get it between $300-$400, then that is more in line with the current market.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

What Ayrton said. FWIW, I have a MIJ 62 RI of the same vintage and it's an excellent guitar.

Your market is a lot different than mine. People around here are expecting much more than $500 for an average MIJ strat.

what about it makes you think it might not be an origianl schaller?

i also found this one:

but i would probably want to put some kind of floyd on it (schaller/gotoh). not a huge problem. i have access to a professional wood shop.

i like the idea of a maple neck better (cuz i don't have one currently).
they may both benefit from pickup replacement.
don't know the model of the body on the turquoise one. i'm assuming MiM.
might be able to make a deal on the Japanese strat. without knowing, i'm guessing from $500 down to $450, without insulting the seller.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

yeah, $500 for an MIJ is not a bad price, but it's not really a bargain either.

Rip 'em pickups out and put in something quality, and you will have an axe that will go toe-to-toe with any American Strat with ease. MIJ fenders are usually top notch in terms of build quality.

But obviously, play the thing, inspect for repairs or excessive playing wear 'n' tear etc.

also I am the proud owner of a 1996 MIJ '62 reissue strat.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

I agree with the others - it's a not steal or anything, but is an 'ok' price. $400 would be better and it's what i would offer.

Of course for another $150 you could probably buy an american standard. Japanese Strats are very good, but if I were paying that much I'd probably buy the US guitar unless you're really diggin' the trem, OP.

Re: 1988 Japanese Strat on the CL

I got one that was in fabulous condition with original case last year and paid 550.00 on the bay. The trem is a Schaller, but it is not a locking trem. A OFR won't retrofit in it either, but it doesn't matter, I could not make it go out of tune. The pups have a great vintage tone believe it or not. The body is routed for singles. I routed out the bridge pup area for a humbuggler.
