1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio repair

Re: 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio repair

If you're still looking for tuners, Gotoh Klusons are a direct drop-in. The only change needed is a set of 10mm bushings which Philadelphia Luthier sells. I made the swap on my SG and they were a huge improvement over the horrible Gibson Deluxe tuners.

Re: 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio repair

I just recently put the Gibby Deluxe tuners on my SG and they're fine. I've had my Lp for 12 years now and no issue with them. There was a time they were crap but the new ones work well IME.

Fun project. If it were mine, I'd paint it satin black and finish it off like a Rat Rod with cream and red pin striping. But, I already have a goldtop.

Awesome project!

Funny, if that was a Fender most guys would be trying to beat it up even MORE for the "relic" look lol

Re: 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio repair

I got a set of grover deluxes that are identical to the kluson/gibson tuners, drop in replacement. The guitar is playable at this point, but obviously I still want to do the goldtop at some point. That black with pinstripe is absolutely perfect for a killer look. Maybe on a later project. I need to find a replacement logo for the headstock which is currently my priority in repairing the finish, but I am unsure of where to source that.

Relicing for me is like dumping coca-cola all over your car's body and making it rust to make it look "vintage". Of course there are some beautiful guitars which have actually obtained such effects over decades of careful exposure and that has an awesome feel to it. I feel like relicing kind of hurts the whole selling used insturments things. On craigslist alone I always see Mexican/Squier Strats that got "reliced" and look like they got nuked by sandpaper & vinegar, usually wanting upwards of $400. Ironically enough when I built my black strat a year ago I considered that and realized that its wasting good parts.

Thanks for all the awesome comments guys! More on the way.

I do love goldtops, but I'm kind of digging the way its looking now.

So the 36th's are different in a good way?

I like how I've done the natural back and sides but the top, in my opinion, should be gold. Doing some research this model actually might have been a studio lite similar to this one:

The PAF 36th Anniversaries are quite refreshing compared to using mainly single coils since I began playing. The 335 I've used on and off for a while still has a really bad set of pickups. Since that I never really liked humbuckers, but the Dimarzios exceeded my expectations. They go clean when picking normally yet with the right pick attack they have a great crunch to them.

For the Goldtop I went with a Vintage Gold aerosol from StewMac, hopefully it will arrive by next weekend and we can get to painting!

Headstock decal applied! Next step is more clear and careful sanding

Goldtop paint will arrive by wednesday, I've also ordered the conversion posts and an abr1 bridge.

Alright man! I'm loving your progress on this one.
Please do share the rest of your job. :)

Removing the stoptail bushings SUCK, probably the most frustrating repair so far:

Re: 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio repair

Needs a few more tweaks. But we're almost done. I had to go back and wax pot the pickups after they squealed like a dying pig. The ABR-1 & stoptail fit well, and it appears to hold itself together:

Might add some paper in oil capacitors as the last bit. I'll be taking a long nap...

I'm not a big fan of GoldTops but that looks beautifull. Great refinish work. I hope it plays as good for you as it looks.
