1996 Fender USA Strat Ultra - Value?

They've got a sweet 1996 USA Fender Strat Ultra at the local pawn shop. They've got a $380 price tag on it. I could probably get it for a little less, but I'm wondering what would be a great deal on this guitar...

The attached pictures are not the actual guitar, but it's the same as that. Lace Sensor pickups, ebony fretboard, an alder body with ash veneers and flamed maple top, aged white pearloid pickguard, Schaller locking tuners, LSR roller nut, TBX tone control, 3-way mini toggle for bridge pickup (single coil, series coils, single coil).

It's definitely an interesting guitar. I like what I've read about it and it looks nice although it needs to be cleaned up. What would be a killer price on this guitar?

All the ones I've seen listed on eBay or sold on eBay are $1000+. Yes, it's not nearly as cleaned up as the one in the pics but it seems to be all original and structurally sound. I'll be in the shop more next week. Hopefully it's still there.

Wait, if it's an alder body with a flamed maple top, where do they put the ash veneers? Back and sides?

Yeah they have layaway but I'm super broke for the time being.

Think of the body as 3 pieces. Alder down the middle with ash above and below that. Then sandwich those 3 pieces between a front and back piece of maple.

That's weird having the wood stacked like that.

See if they'll take that whammy pedal as trade for layaway. I know I sound like a broken record, but even if you hate the guitar, you'd likely be able to flip it, get a USA Strat you love, and have money left over.

You could add a one in front of that price and change it to £'s and we'd lucky to see one for that price this side of the pond!

$380 sounds like a great deal on pretty much any USA guitar, assuming it's in at least working condition.

I know my friend JB From Hell speaks the truth. They won't take the Whammy pedal in I don't believe... They're closed today. I did fix my two pickup cheapo strat so that a normal player may appreciate it, so I'll take that in there tomorrow morning and see if it'll work as a down payment for a layaway, or at least hold it till I get paid Friday. I will definitely follow up.

According to George Gruhn, the Plus had top and backAsh veneers as an option, the Plus Deluxe had them standard and the Ultra swapped them out for maple veneers. Which makes more sense. So no thin layer of Ash hiding beneath the thin layer of maple after all.

Hmm me personally. No I think I've only owned a large plethora of MIM strats and a few squiers (including my #1 MIJ Squier bullet).
