1st mag swap

Naw. That'd be a Custom with an alnico 4. Might be cool though! So might an alnico 3.

I've owned the Custom, Custom 5 and Custom Custom.

I liked the Custom best. The original with a ceramic magnet. But not enough to keep.

Exponent, power of 4. Not Custom 4. Custom(4)

Was suprised to see how much shorter the Ibz mag was compared to the SD mags.
Short A5 isn't a random thing or an aberration; it's a deliberate choice in some pickup designs.
Slightly weaker magnetic field than full length.
Gibson used short A5s in the T-top humbuckers of the 60s and 70s.

I've had the Custom, Custom 5, and Custom Custom as well. Like you the Custom is probably my favorite and I've had one in my Explorer since 2003. I have a second one currently looking for a home, but time will tell on that one. I also really like the Custom Custom in the bridge of my Charvel Model 4. Of the 3 Customs, the only one I didn't care for was the Custom 5; it was too bright and scooped in my Explorer and the Charvel.

I agree. 100%.

This is my experience as well. The C5 was too scooped in the mids for me. I have an 83’-86’ Custom that reads 13.3K that I just love. I have also had several CC’s in strats that I really liked as well.

I have a very mid-heavy poplar guitar that is a perfect candidate for the C5. It sounds like a Custom Custom in there- there are just so many mids. It took me awhile to give the guitar what it needed rather than what I thought it needed.
