1x12 cab and head or get a combo?

since ive decided what kind of amp im getting, now i gotta decide if i should just get the head and buy a small cab for home use, so then if i get in a band situation i can just buy a bigger cab instead of an entire thing.

or buy a 75W Combo and play it at low volume, then crank it at shows

what you guys think i should do?

I'm personnaly a fan of combos: they're easier to drag around (1 piece even though heavier) and most of them have another out so you can plug a cab(s) to move more air if need be. That said, I'm taking in consideration the fact that you're looking at the same wattage, just with two different formats...

Just get a combo with speaker outs. That works. Does look a little gay to have a combo on top of a cabinet though. What kind of amp are you looking for? Some are more suited to heads or combos.

Get a head and 1X12. Alot of combos will be open backed and that makes for looser lows. Sure its two pieces to lug around but I think your sound quality will be higher. The box is designed for ONLY the speaker, instead of a speaker and amp.

I like heads and cabs because then you can buy the cab that sounds the best along with the head that sounds best

with combo's its all to often dealing with getting a great amp with crappy speakers, open back when you want closed back or vice versa etc.

Get the head and cab. A cabinet made just for a speaker will provide for a lot better acoustics since the chassis isn't in there with it, and like said before your combo will probably be an open back with less lows and punch. In my case I play mostly blues and jazz so I have an open back cabinet which provides a little more natural and room filling sound. But since your looking at a randall amp I assume you play more rock music so closed back would be the way to go. Most of the time combo cabs just suck anyway.

Combos are really convienient, though.

As an older guy with a bad back my vote goes for a seperate head and cabinet. I'm much better off making two 'lighter' trips up and down my basement as opposed to one heavier trip. But then, you're MUCH younger than me and I'm sure your back is in better shape than mine.

randall makes some cheaper ones too, but for the money you could get an avatar with better speakers...thats what i've been told anyways

im probably gunna get a combo since its got more punch for the $$ i only got 400 to blow, and at that amount i cant even buy a decent head for that, except for a randall g3 which is 300 at my local shop. which would leave me with 100$ for a cab
