1x12 Cab Market

So I'll most likely be purchasing a Tiny Terror pretty soon, and as all my current amps are combos I'll be needing a cab. After a decent amount of trial, thought, and consideration, 1x12 is probably the best option for me at the moment. Only problem is I haven't played very many 1x12 cabs, as most stores (at least that I've been to) don't stock many.

My criteria:
-Tiny Terror will be going through it, so it needs to play nice with the TT
-I play doomy metal and NWOBHM style stuff for the most part
-I like big mids and I cannot lie
*I would really really like to stay under $350, preferably under $300 while maintaing quality.

So what do you kids recommend?

The most logical pairing would of course be the Orange PPC112. Does anyone here have experience with those? I've played the 212 and 412 and both were pretty terrific, but I've never encountered the 112.

Avatar speakers. Get the oversized contemporary cabinet. With your choice of speaker it comes to $279. Orange seems to prefer Celestion Vintage 30s for their amps? You could even get orange tolex to match your amp

I've got one of these and I like it very much. I use it as a guitar monitor on the other side of the stage and to practice with. It seems to be well built, no MDF that I can see. Celestion G12H-30. You can get 15% off thru www.musiciansfriend.com using code "save15off" and the shipping is free.......

I wanted the Orange 1x12 but it was out of my price range and I'm not really a fan of Vintage 30's.....

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

......you can get the Orange PPC112 from Musicians Friend for $379 minus 15% ($322) and it's be cheaper than the Avatar at $279 + $45 shipping...........

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

You should look into a high efficiency speaker with good mids and bass response. Also look into a sealed box or closed back/ported cab. For your style I would definitely recommend the Eminence Swamp Thang or Wizard, but I dunno if your budget can be stretched to include a speaker or not ...

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

I would consider an open back cab or open back tiny terror combo, closed back is laserlike directional and with a 1x12 and not a 2x12 it may be hard to position without putting it propped up on an angle toward your ears

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

A ported 1x12 like a thiele would be awesome. I have seen old Mesa cabs with ev's below that price on craigslist at times. That would be an awesome little setup if you ask me.

I love the Tiny Terror. I've almost bought it like 4 times but always talk myself out of it lol.

Whitebox, stagecraft, mathers are all a good place to start for new. Similar to price in Avatar but a cut above in quality. Port City is cool too if you go vented or ported.

It certainly would, wouldn't it. Hmmm. I wish that wasn't disappearing after today, so I wouldn't have to decide immediately. ****. I may just put it off and wait for MF's next deal if I go that route, so its not such a snap decision (though I was leaning towards PPC to start with anyhow).

Ah, damn. As I said I'm generally not very experienced with 1x12 cabs. Though I tend to sit directly in front of the speakers no matter what I'm playing through anyhow, so it wouldn't be much of a change. And I'd like to stay away from combo's- I've been all combos up to this point and would like to have a nice cabinet I can plug other things into as well.

I know nothing about these companies. I just looked them up and they do fall in the right range. Except for Port City that is, holy ****. Would you recommend any of these over the Orange cab as well as the Avatar?

The whitebox seems like an especially good idea with the convertible open/semi-open/closed back feature. And the stagecraft has the speaker slightly angled up, so thats a plus as well.

Something I've discovered with Musicians Friend coupon codes: Often if you put the item in your shopping cart and apply the coupon code to get the discount it appears at the discounted price later when you return to the website, even if the sale is technically over! Just a thought!

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

I'll give that a shot.

I was just thinking (yes my mind was entirely on amps and cabs as I sat out drinking and watching fireworks this evening) that I'm 84% sure I have indeed played the PPC112 before and really liked it. The first time I ever played a Rockerverb, I'm now almost certain it was through the 112, as when I saw it I thought "Hm, why do they have such a big bad amp plugged in to just a lil' cab?" And I doubt I would've thought that about the 212, as the Orange 212 is pretty sizable. So perhaps the 112 is the right choice after all. If the sale coupon sticks in my cart, then I will know for sure. ...and also, if xxxplorer gets back about those other brands and deems the Orange a worthy competitor.

*edit- Upon further investigation, that was long enough ago that they were most likely still made in UK. Now its China, so I'm not so confident. Hm.

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

Alright, I think I figured out what I'm gonna do. It just dawned on me today that my Triple X 212 combo has the speakers going into a jack on the back of the amp rather than being hardwired. So I can just worry about this one purchase at a time. I can buy the Terror, unplug the speakers from the XXX and plug that into the back of the TT. The ohms match up, the XXX speakers total to 16 and the TT has a 16 ohm jack.

I'm sure it'll sound less than optimal, the XXX speakers aren't great, but then I can save my money and do a lot more in-depth investigating into a dedicated cab for the Tiny Terror.

I'm pretty psyched. Should have this underway by the end of the month.

Yeah. The Vintage cab is a nice size also. Mine has a Hellatone 30, which is a C12H30 broken in by Avatar, the Hellatone 60 is the same thing done to a C Vin 30. Great stuff! Yes, there are color options!

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

If you change your mind and plan to get a 1x12 with lots of big mids as you say,
drop a Eminence Wizard into it. Even closed to scooped it has plenty of mids!

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

Oh I do plan to get something for the Orange eventually. I'll just have more time now to plan and fund it.

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

Having great luck with my v30 loaded ampeg cab. They make 2 versions, one "oversized". They are ply cabinets and mine at least is well put together. both under 3 bills. I would have prefered a matching red avatar 2x12 cab for my class 5, but just couldnt swing it along with other things I needed. For home or a small gig the ampeg is great.

FWIW, the orange 1x12 is very nice as well. Def better construction and a bit beefier than the ampeg, but its $120 more.

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

if ur gonna get the orange tiny terror head, then ya I would try what cab you have first and go from there.

nothing sounds like a 212 or 412 or 612 closed back cab! it is night and day from open back cabs. closed back is the way to go for heavy rock, its just that 112 closed back cab is really directional and moves only so much air and only has 1 speaker in it so you dont get that dual sound...I have contemplated this too, here are some threads of interest:

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

I have three 1x12 cabs.

Mesa Widebody Front Ported (Theile)
Mesa Widebody Open Back
Mesa Electra Dyne Rear Ported

By far the best sounding is the Electra Dyne rear ported design. It's a 2x12 sized cab with a single speaker in it. It sounds very full and natural without the boxy "small amp" sound of the smaller cabs.

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

Re: 1x12 Cab Market

Yeah the 112 seems pretty popular over there. Though it is the Orange forum after all.
