1x12 or 2x10

I am definitely going to purchase a Marshall CODE series, but I was wondering if I should get the 50 watt 1x12 or the 100 watt 2x12. I will start playing gigs soon, so I want something that I can really push in terms of volume.

I've not tried any of the CODE series amps–cool concept IMO. Do you have any gigs lined up? If so what size are we talking about/what type of venues?

My advice is try both–some people prefer 1x12s and others prefer 2x12s. I always gravitate towards 1x12s–just those are the amps that I stick with.

its a ss amp so the tone wont change all that much. 50w 1x12 is probably plenty especially if its mic'd up. a 100w 2x12 will have a louder clean tone. i havent tried any of this series so dont know how they stack up

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

With digital modeling amps you don't want to push the power amp. In my opinion, the only downside to the 100 watt version in this case is a greater size and weight of the 2x12. It never hurts to have as much wattage as possible with solid state. They don't need to be turned up for tone like tube amps, so you can turn up a little or a lot- as needed, but you always want to have more than needed. As long as the 100 watt 2x12 is isn't too big and heavy to haul around, get that one in my opinion.

I like my using my Mesa Mark Series open-back 112 amps with a closed-back Mesa 112 EVM Thiele-ported cab underneath. Puts the controls at the right height, and it's more maneuverable and versatile than a 212. Win-win.

Situations in which I'll be using them amp in:
Practice (Bedroom)
Metal Band rehearsal (2 guitars, a bassist and a drummer)
and a Blues combo (a bass trombone, trumpet, euphonium, drums, keyboard and bass)

I know CODE has the versatility and sound quality, but it's a matter of how much air I need to push.
My current thinking is that the fifty watt will be enough as I can always mic it, and I think if I really crank it it will old up against the horns.
I've seen people use less in my Jazz band, but what so y'all think? I know it's nice to have lots of headroom, but is it worth the 150 upcharge? (I'm also buying the footswitch)

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

Yeah - title says 2x10 - which would definitely be my choice.

If you have a bass and drums going, the punch of a 10 is perfect IMO…

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

I looked at Sweetwater and din't see a 2-10 option.

What I did see at Sweetwater and with a little added research:

1-12 $250, 28.6 lbs.
2-12 $400, 52.9 lbs.

You double your wattage, add 60% to your cost and almost double the weight going from one speaker to two. It would seem to me like a big investment if the only real benefit was moving more air. That said, in my limited experience
50W SS isn't particularly loud.

Is there no way you can try one in a band situation?

2x10 would be nice and punchy.
I call my Sunn Beta Lead Tyson. Granted, it's a 4x10.

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

Years ago I bought a 2x12 Bad Cat directly from James. He practically begged me to get the 1x12 version. But I'm a strong man blah blah blah. Heavy as heck. It wouldn't have been fun carting it around. Granted it was a combo and he uses massive iron.

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

I meant 2x12, my bad. No, I have no way of trying in a band situation. I am able to be heard with a 15 watt fender frontman, so will the 50 watt be enough?

More power + more speakers = more love. And the love you take = the love you make. Digital modeling amps never keep up with real amps in a live setting so you might as well have the extra firepower just in case.

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

Thanks, I think I'll go with the 2x12. Even though I think the 50 watter could handle it, I really do want to have some extra gas in the tank for any live situations. Thanks for the help everyone! 😆

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

Hi,

Whether it is 2x10 or 2x12, I prefer the spread of a 2x cab. The 1x12 is technically "enough" to suit your needs, but it really comes down to taste.

Re: 1x12 or 2x10

I like a closed 1x12 for very small practice spaces (10'x10' or smaller) A 2x12 open back will fill a room twice that size.
