2.5 Ohm Speaker Load On A 4 Ohm OT?.....................

Re: 2.5 Ohm Speaker Load On A 4 Ohm OT?.....................

Typically one degree of mismatch isn't going to hurt you, i.e a 4r load connected to the 8r tap, because realistically there is a larger degree of what is an acceptable reflected primary z for the output stage, however that greatly depends on how swayed towards one direction the reflected A-A primary load chosen for the plate and screen voltage, and class of operation already is in the first place, so it's always better not to if you don't know where you stand. For example I would never stick a lower load on a Marshall (4r load on an 8r tap), which is already somewhat heavily loaded when sticking a 16r load to the 16r tap, but I would have no problem sticking a 16r load on a typical Marshall set to the 8.

The total overall with all speakers connected according to my DVM reads 2.5 Ohms. The Scorpion speaker and the 4X6 cab are wired parallel. I understand that the 5881 tube will want to see half the impedance of a 6V6. Could this then be an ideal situation?

That will completely depend on where the plate and screen voltage fall for either. There really is an ideal value in terms of maximum power transfer, and one for reduced distortion, neither of which coincide with each other so there is some leeway. What is the primary z of the output transformer that you are using, and what voltage are you running the 5881's at?

If it sounds good, better to be cautious. Though maybe the 4x6 by itself would be ok. I defer to those more experienced on this though.

I believe the 5881 is the culprit. The higher heater amp draw is causing the PT to heat up. I changed back to the 6V6 and reconnected the 4X6 cab and all is fine now. Thanks all.

That will do it, they draw nearly double, and it certainly will cause heat if the pt was spec'd with no leeway. Glad all worked out!
