2-button footswitch

I'm having a hard time finding a marshall 2-button footswitch. Can I use a Laney or Peavey footswitch, or just about any other 2-button footswitch for my amp?

Re: 2-button footswitch

Any 2-button footswitch will work. They have to be latching. Unlatched is momemtary. Don't get that Boss switch. They don't change until you let your foot up where as the Marshalls and others like it switch when depressed.

Re: 2-button footswitch

I have a single Boss latching footswitch and don't use it for that very reason. Ended up making my own using a Hoover vacuum cleaner switch. That thing should last for darn near forever...lol.

Re: 2-button footswitch

what are latching footswitches? how do i know if it is, if it's not written on the box/manual?

Re: 2-button footswitch

Most footswitches are latching, meaning once the button is depressed, your effect or whatever will stay on even when you release said button. Others are momentary, meaning the effect or item being controlled will be on only when the button is depressed.

Some swtiches allow you to switch between both modes for different applications.

Re: 2-button footswitch

I found a relatively inexpensive foot switch at my local music store from Hosa that seems sturdy and has given me no trouble at all. I even added an LED for a status display.

Re: 2-button footswitch

So I bought a Fender 2-button footswitch about an hour ago...and didn't get to test it...but it's very cheap, bought it for like $11 and is in mint condition:

However, looking at pictures of the Marshall P802 - which is THE footswitch for my JCM900 - I noticed that there are like 2-grooves in the jack (for stereo?):

Now, I'm wondering if my newly purchased Fender Footswitch would work on my JCM900? Or did I just waste $11?

Re: 2-button footswitch

A standard two button switch needs three leads (common plus a return for each switch). I'm not sure how the Fender switch accomplishes that without looking inside. It may have some kind of relay switching that will only work with Fender amps.

Bottom line, it would seem you bought a switch that won't work with your amp.

By the way, the Marshall jack is like a stereo jack, typically called a tip-ring-sleeve or TRS jack. The common is wired to the sleeve, while each switch is wired through the tip and the ring.

Re: 2-button footswitch

The Fender didn't work. I don't know why it came with mono plugs/cable.

I found a bnew Marshall 2-button footswitch for the MG series which says "Channel" and "DFX" on the buttons, and it works perfectly! And yes, stereo plug :)

Thanks all!

And yes, I got it relatively cheap: around ~22USD :)

Re: 2-button footswitch

That sucks I made the same mistake buying a Fender footswitch to use for my Polytone head to switch channels and reverb on/off. Fenders footswitches are for the most part proprietary to Fender amps and I had to go with Voodoo Man for his footswitch. Cost me about $40 with shipping.
