2 x 12 cab or an Atomic

Gah....it kills me to say this....

I need to make a decision on this post haste!

I've got a PodXT.

Currently I have a Crate PowerBlock, so a 2 x 12 cab could work out great!

But as I start pricing things out the idea of the Atomic 18 watter starts having more and more appeal to me.

Considering the $400 price tag and the fact that I'm not finding anything that's not going to put me within spitting distance of the Atomic I'm seriously starting to consider it.

No, it's probably not as loud as the PowerBlock, but keep in mind that I've made do with a Blues Junior and several other smaller amps for quite awhile.

Anyone used both?

I haven't used both. I use the PB as it is.
Do you run in the front of the PB or through the FX loop?

I have been Told. Whether it is true or not I dunno. That the 18watter should be louder than the PB.

I'm in the same position as you though. I can't decide whether I want to purcahse a 2x12 or go for an Atomic.

Re: 2 x 12 cab or an Atomic

Ya know...it's funny. I ran the PB into the Front and found it had more output than the loop.

I didn't think that the 18 watter would be louder.....

Re: 2 x 12 cab or an Atomic

either way... You could do it pretty nicely with a Cabinet, but then again, ehh.. i dunno.

Good Luck Bro!

Don't quote me on it. Just what I heard.

I can't find any tones I really agree with running it through the front. The additional EQ screws me up.

Ya mind PMing me some setting or sharing a patch? I would love to be able to use the Volume control on the PB rather than reaching down to tweak it on the floor. I haven't had a chance lately to sit down and tweak either.

Re: 2 x 12 cab or an Atomic

The thing about the PB though....now that I think about it when I auditioned before I think I might of had it in the Effects Loop because the Volume on the PB didn't do anything...sorry about that.

The EQing did screw it up for me though...it was the first thing I realized I needed to not have in the mix.

Let me get through this audition and I might have a better idea about it all and then I'll send some patches out.

Anyone know how the single speaker colors the sound? I know I spent most of my time working with patches as needing to unload the cab sims and using the 2 x 12 it was in front of.

Damn...where is Institute of Noise when I need him???

Re: 2 x 12 cab or an Atomic

I be here!!! I've heard the power block with a POD and it's ok... Matter of fact I saw Neil Giraldo from Pat Benatar's band very recently using it. It sounded good, but there was still a tad of harshness I didn't like on the gainier stuff. They make a decent backup setup, but I'd never make that my first choice knowing the Atomics sound even so much better.

Don't get close to what you want, get exactlywhat you want to hear! If you want a 2x12, get the Atomic 212. It's a beast! Or get the 50-112 and run an extenstion cab with it if you need more power. The 18w does not have the ext cab option. And don't be foole dby what 18 watts sounds like. It is loud! If your gonna be miced always on stage and are not playing gigantic stages and yoru band excerciese proper dynamics, the 18w works just great. I used 2 in stereo for over 2 years without any problems being heard ever. I use 2 50-112's now. Just this past week I played at The Cat Club in Hollywood and brough one 50-112. Instead of using crappy backline I took the ext cab out as well into a Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 backline on stage. It was blisteringly loud. Way more than you'd ever really need on stage. The 112 by itself would be enough, but I lowed the volume and angled the 4x12 for the other members to hear me better. I think I was on 2 on the POD's output and again it was almost too loud. With the 18w I'd probably have had the volume on about 5 on the POD.

Don't get me wrong the 18w is still a great little amp. Mine have served me more than ever so well for years. And I've never had an issue form them of playing out all the time. I've also done plenty of sessions running m Kasha Amps Rockmod preamp into it with stellar results as well. The 18w loves just about anything you push into it.

I'm not a big amp guy....the most I have here in my house is 22 watts of Deluxe Reverb Reissue. If I'm going to go with a larger gig then I'll just mic it; my days of lugging huge amps are over and done with for the most part, hence the appeal of an Atomic over a cab.

But I still want to know about the speaker and such. How good is it and how does it effect the tone of it? I know most of the modifications I'm going to be doing my patches will be compensating for different power setups and speakers. The Marshall 2 x 12 I was using with the Crate PowerBlock was a tad dark and I had to EQ accordingly. What effect does the speaker in the 18 watter compare?

I may just go with my Blues Junior for the audition...it's way shorter a span of time for making this decision than I feel good about.
