Re: 2 x12" cabs

I have had good experiences with both Stone Age Custom Cabinets and also Avatar cabs. Both make 2x12 open back designs and I believe both offer a closed back converter panel. They both carry speakers (Eminence and Celestion primarily) and will load with your choice.

Re: 2 x12" cabs

For me Saxon cabs in Ontario have been a tremendous value and it's all custom. I highly suggest you give them a look. Everyone who's heard the diagonal 2x12 Tim built for me has been impressed.

Re: 2 x12" cabs

If I were to buy a 2x12, it would probably be a Mesa horizontal, Splawn, Avatar Vintage, or, Avatar Contemporary.

Re: 2 x12" cabs

I love my EVH cabs, they're big sounding, oversize like mesas and orange. And I like the g12h speakers better than vintage 30s.

Id stay away from Carvin, they're on the thinner side like Marshalls. For a 2x12 you need a bigger cab like avatar contemporary, orange or Evh to get a big sound

Re: 2 x12" cabs

I'm a big fan of the Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12 (formerly endorsed by George Lynch). Excellent construction, and they sound great. Perfect for lower tunings, as the cabs remain very tight at low frequencies. Ported as well. However, I think Genz-Benz may have discontinued them, so there's only the used market.

Re: 2 x12" cabs

You really want to find out which speaker suits you first. You can buy a CD full of speaker recordings somewhere (I have it).

Re: 2 x12" cabs

Bear in mind that your speaker setup affects your tone (especially EQ) more than any other single element. Taking general recommendations is not likely to get you the sound you want, unless from someone who's tone you want to emulate.

Don't believe me? Try using an amp modeler that offers different cabinet choices and just dial through them. You will hear very wide variations. This opened my ears up and revealed to me that I have been selecting cabs for my rigs very haphazardly over the years - and why sometimes I have suffered with or tried to work around sounds I really didn't dig that much.

If you don't have access to personally sampling many cab types loaded with different speakers, I suggest either soliciting info about specific player's rigs or describing your desired sound very precisely. You might get lucky that way.

There's also Ear Candy Buzz Bombs, ported like the Genz Benz, but I think the company went out of business.

Re: 2 x12" cabs

I'll second the Mesa Vertical... sort of. I don't have one, but was looking to buy one for a while, then a friend of mine who has a custom woodworking business built me one for less. Its made to the same dimensions, but custom finish, my choice in speakers and grille

He also made a new shell for my MkV to match the cab. The other rig in the second pic is a 2x12 and shell he made for the other guitar player in my band's single recto.
he also made the guitar in the first pic, not a partscaster he hand made everything but the hardware, and wound the pickup.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Mesa Horizontal or Vertical Recto 212 cabs, or the older Half-Back 212 or 412...the 412 isn't really that much bigger.

I don't think the older Marshall 1936 cabs are bad at all, but my appreciation is usually based on the speakers in it.

But honestly, the old small Fender BF Bassman and Band Master cabs are hard to beat. I've heard them with a varied of speaker--Celestion, EVM, JBL, Jensen, Eminence, Altec...and they all sounded great. My all-time fave, with the Mesa cabs a very close second. The Mesa cabinet work is the best in the business these days.
