20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

I never mind more frets... But by the same token, why not fill a guitar with frets :laugh2: do away with the whole lower bout, contour it so that you can fret all the way to the bridge, use a piezo pickup...

Why stop anywhere or at any particular place? I wonder if people who have those 36 fret things from the 80s wonder why anyone would live with 24 :smokin:

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

I just don't get why they still make 20 and 21 fretters... 22 or 24, get with the program folks unless you want a jazz sounding guit and just slap a pup right next to the 19th fret,

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

24 fret guitars move the neck pickup closer to the bridge, changeing the tone (not only brighter, but different harmonics). As far as 21 vs. 22 on something like a Strat, it's just for vintage looks. I honestly couldn't imagine playing any more than a 24 fret guitar, they just get so close at that point.

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

PRS has said that 22-fret guitars offer more sustain, while 24-fret guitars have more tonal range.

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

I prefer 22 frets. I have a couple of 24 fretters as well but I find I can't finger those extra frets anyway.

Looking at what's been been done by guitarists the last 50 years with 22 frets, I can't justify the need for more.

24 fret fretboard require moving the neck pickup. There's a big deal right there.

Some Strat alikes with 22 frets don't have the overhang, they have enlarged neck pockets. Not good when swapping parts.

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

i play them all... once in a blue moon, playing my Fenders with 21 frets i find i need a 22nd fret... but even then you make do with it... find a way...

i use some 24 fret necks

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

i beat the system and use a whammy pedal with 22 fret necks. two octaves up from the 22nd fret is what, the 46th fret?:nervous::cool2::fart:

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

I HATE 21 fret necks! That is so retarded!

They need to be 22 or 24 and the 24's must only have a single bucker! A neck pickup does not cut it for me in a 24.

what if it's got a neck single coil or stacked bucker? Then it's not really an issue is it?

Ahh.....I can deal with it a bit better than with a neck bucker but, I still rather have a single bucker with a 24 fret.

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

21 frets is plenty for me, I don't usually play past the 16th or 17th fret, so 21 is all I need.

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

It seams ever neck picup i play is to low and boomy so i think that the difference in the position on a 24 fret guitar helps me out a little. It brightens up that up a little....Richard

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

Looking at what's been been done by guitarists the last 50 years with 22 frets, I can't justify the need for more.

But aren't we supposed to keep music evolving instead of it being stuck? With all the tools we have today (affordable synths, effects, COMPUTERS!!, affordable and good sounding DIY studios...) I don't really think we can justify our stuff with the past. But then again, I don't think two frets are gonna hold us back musically that much haha ;) , and I don't think music has evolved much either haha...

I prefer 22 frets. I have a couple of 24 fretters as well but I find I can't finger those extra frets anyway.

Ever tried a 24 fretter with the last 4 or 6 frets scalloped? Last week I finally played a JEM and it was really comfortable...but I never really had trouble with the high frets...I've got small hands...

Re: 20, 21, 22, 24 fret guitars?

I don't need more than 21 frets. More isn't nessecarily better- for me, having a guitar with 24 frets is about as pointless as having a fullstack for bedroom use.
