20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

This January is the second time I will have ever gone to NAMM as I have no consistent means of going. And while I didn't get the chance last time, I vow to hug EVERY SINGLE SEYMOUR DUNCAN REPRESENTATIVE THERE, no matter how awkward it gets. That includes Mr. Duncan himself.

Didn't get to last time but I did snag a nifty pickup necklace from MJ that I still have actually. She shall be the first to receive a hug.

MJ gives a great hug, see you there - please come introduce yourself and I'll show you the new stuff - it's the most impressive lineup we've had in years, IMHO.

Hey Edge and Itsa . . . cool info on old DuPont/GM colors. So, . . . does anyone know who Daphne was? :D

I guess it could be named after a certain person, but I always assumed it was after Daphne from Greek mythology.

That was my first thought way back when this first "stuck in my craw". But there's no reference to anyone named Daphne, (in Greek mythology), and the color blue, that I can find.

Btw, I don't want to hijack this cool thread. Maybe I'll start this as a new thread.

But she was a water nymph.

I think paint names are often just sort of pulled out of the air. Maybe it was named after a particular woman. I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

I know that Kevin Beller has had a hand in a lot of the newer pickups that I like that you have came out with in the last few years. I may be wrong but after years of reading about things on the forum, I take it that Kevin and Cathy are married and this gives him a lot of freedom to try and develop new products? I also like the fact that it still has the feeling of a small family business.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

hehe... thats not quite true anymore josh but it still is very much a family business

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Why is Seymour's former "right hand" minimizing Mr. Duncan's personal role in the company? Why is it just now being suggested that other people are responsible for the success of SD? Something here does not add up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but so Cathy divorced Seymour to marry Kevin, then he divorced him as well? :scratchch

Man, I just can't even start to imagine how something like this would affect the dynamics inside a company, specially if it's a FAMILY business. Only, if I understand this correctly, the FAMILY is no more? Man, do *I* feel for Seymour and Derek...

If this happened recently, I think I know why things look the way they do from afar...

So, WHO is actually in charge?

Inquiring minds would like to know. :cool2:

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

cathy is in charge as she has always been as far as i know. i wont get into the personal details of relationships, not my place.

i dont think anyone is taking anything away from seymour. he is a wealth of knowledge and a prominent figure at the company

That reads a bit humorously. One would certainly hope that Seymour Duncan was a prominent figure at the Seymour Duncan Co. :D

4) If you ask him 'What is tone?' prepare to get the most amazing 30 minute answer that goes into every minute detail of a guitar, signal and delves into the philosophical and physics.

16) Hung out with Jimi Hendrix and wound pickups for him on several occasions.

19) When it comes to pickups & guitar construction, he's a never ending encyclopedia.

This is such a tease. I get the feeling Seymour Duncan doesn't care for the spotlight too much, or maybe he doesn't care for interneting, but it would be cool if he could do a periodic Q&A. No chit chat, just a set of questions and some answers, and then he can keep on keepin' on.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Seymour will be the first to tell you that the success of the SD company is all about a very dedicated team of well over 100 people, that include product designers, product development people, production workers and assemblers, purchasers, operations folks, custom shop, sales and marketing, human resources, and so on. Even though the name of the company is the same as one man who is the co-founder of the company and is arguably the most important person in the company's history, we never would've got to where we are today if it weren't for the rest of the team.

That's nothing new. It's always been this way.

This is all very true, however there are for me two important omissis here: direction and drive.

Where are they at today, if you don't mind me asking, Evan?

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

As for drive, I see it every day when I'm in the factory. To be a world leader in a product category, a company needs to have drive and focus. The personnel at SD are very driven--you have to be to succeed there.

As for direction, I'm no longer on the SD management team and I don't participate in the discussions regarding the future direction of the company. But I think it's safe to say that the long range direction remains unchanged: to continue to be a supplier of premium musical instrument accessories and help guitarists get tone that sets them apart.

I don't think this a fair accusation based on the information that's available to us. R&D costs a lot of money. Every new product is a gamble. They know full well that if they never released another product, the world will move on without them. We just have to be patient until which time they feel they've been dealt a good hand. I haven't seen the other pickup makers offering anything much lately, unless you want count those new vintage-themed pickups that require batteries. I think the fact that this forum hasn't been shut down ten times over again is ambitious and optimistic in itself.
