2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

I've been interested in the 2014 Firebird (sunburst) for a while. Goes for $1618 and change. The other day I ran across the 2015 Junior (yellow), but haven't played one yet. The Junior is going for about $900. If anyone has played either one and can give me some impressions, I'd appreciate it a lot. They're both very cool guitars. Obviously, the Junior will be easier on the wallet.

Thanks in advance folks!

I own a 1990 Firebird reissue, so I can speak generally about them. There's pros/cons to both. Real vintage Firebird pickups have a twang to them, almost Strat-like quality but humbucking. All the recent decade Firebird pickups are way overwound, so they just sound like mini-humbuckers. Like a thinner, weaker Les Paul (which is not a bad thing, just works better as a rhythm instrument.) And actually, since I have an SG with P-90s, I can say the bridge pup of the Firebird and a bridge P-90 in a mahogany SG (similar to Junior) sound very much alike. The number one bad thing about Firebirds is the neck is so thin, if you strike a chord and lean forward you hear the chord go in and out of tune.

The Firebird has Tune-O-Matic, so you can get the intonation right. The Junior is fixed wrap-around - though I've been impressed that most recent wrap-tail Gibsons work just fine - even my Melody Makers play in tune. The Junior is one pickup, so you will just be rocking and not getting much in the way of any mellow, ballad or jazz versatility out of it. I'm using my experience with my SG Classic (P-90 / Mahogany) to estimate what the junior might be like.

I might side with the Junior. Affordable, solid, probably more useful all around. Firebird is nice to have, but expensive and will never make it as a daily player.

Good luck.

Thanks. Nice review. I've played both guitars (vintage and more recent ones, but not the newest ones). I'm kinda leaning toward the Junior too, because it's a one trick pony, but a great one. The Firebird is an acquired taste, but such a cool looking guitar.

I've got a Les Paul Custom, a LP/SG '61, a Hamer, and a Strat, so I thought the Junior would be a nice change of pace.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Jeff I really hate those Steinberger tuners they have on the new ones. I would look to see if you can find an older one. Ive been looking for a Bicentennial model. Haven't found one reasonable yet but I keep looking. Remember "our Friend" Ken had one. Unfortunately he sold it before I knew him. The Banjo style tuners add so much mojo to a firebird. I can't figure out why they ever changed them. If you decide on the Firebird(I love them myself and its one that I have always wanted) If the pickups aren't workig for you the Duncan Firebird mini-hums are pretty awesome. I have one in my "Twistedcaster" and that sucker screams in the Tele...

the new tuners let it sit and balance normally and are pretty sweet

banjos weigh about 5lbs each

Thanks Dave. I have a pic of me playing Kenny's Bicentennial at our last Forum jam. I'll try and post it this weekend

Yeah. The reduced weight reduces the risk of the headstock dropping forward and snapping off like the old ones

Re: 2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

A couple of new "improvements" on the 2015 Jr. bug me, first it has the slim taper neck, which I don't like. It also says it has a "wider" fingerboard (why?). I also think it has those new P90 type pickups that have non-adjustable fixed steel poles on them, I don't see why they just don't stick with regular P90's. And, like almost all of the new production guitars, it has that E-tune system on it, which to me is just something else that can go wrong, and isn't necessary (should be an option IMO). I'd go for an earlier Jr. myself, the last reissue was more to my liking, and there still may be some stock around. Of course, if you like the new features, by all means go ahead, but I think they are ruining a nice simple guitar with a bunch of crap, and charging about $400 more for it.

That darned ol' albino blues player may differ with you about it being a daily player.

Re: 2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

The banjo tuners are extremely cool, but just about as heavy as the guitar. Steinbergers are much lighter and more precise.

When was the last reissue, without the G-force tuning, etc? Wattage had a great double cutaway LP Special a few years back. Loved that guitar

Re: 2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

the steinbergers tuners on the firebird are really good once u get used to them the pickups are like a hot mini-hum not a p-90 it does have its place as a lead guitar because it cuts through so well.the neck pickup sounds great but u have to lower the pickup to find the sweet spot.

Re: 2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

I don't understand the rationale that the Min-E-tune system or whatever is something else that can go wrong... I mean, if it stops working, you can still manually tune the guitar right? No offense meant at all, I've never tried the system, but that was just my understanding.

Re: 2015 Gibson Les Paul Junior/2014 Firebird?

If it were my money, I'd buy pretty much any 2014 Gibson over any 2015 Gibson Les Paul. I'm just not a fan of the changes they made this year.
