2x12 cab noise

I recently bought a 2x12 with Celestian speakers. Everything was fine until a couple of nights ago. One of the speakers would make a buzzing sound whenever a low note was played. I know I didn't damage the speaker because I'm using a 15 watt amp and the speakers are 80 watt. Does this mean the speaker is blown, or is there a break-in period??

Re: 2x12 cab noise

Buzzing is not a normal sound for a speaker to make during the break-in process. Buzzing usually indicates a different problem. Usually a structural failure of some sort.

Re: 2x12 cab noise

it's hard to tell remotely. in general it shouldn't be possible to kill even a 30
watt celestion with a 15watt amp ...
possible reasons ...

- something in the chassis is rattling, did you check the back? i already found
a piece of lego in a friends subwoofer ;)

- speaker production failure - shouldn't happen but can

- abuse - did you play bass guitar through it? the low frequencies
would cause deadly cone replacement.

Re: 2x12 cab noise

It's easy to kill any speaker. It has more to do with bass, heat and square waves from pedals.

That buzz is a voice coil rub and the speaker needs to be reconed or replaced.

Try another speaker in there to see if it is in fact the cab.

It sounds to me like a VC rub.

Re: 2x12 cab noise

Could be that something has come loose outside the speaker or the speaker mounting screws are loose and letting the speaker itself rattle in the mount. Make sure everything on the cab is tight and see if you can localize the buzzing. It could be a joint in the wood that isn't actually joined like where two peices rub together etc. Sometimes a dab of silicone will fix things like that.
