2x12 or 4x12 cabs??

hi dudes...

i was wondering which pros and cons have both kinda cabs and what are they use for...

i´m saving for a triaxis and a mesa power amp...but dunno about the cab to use...i´ll use this equipment for home teaching/recording... and prefer the 2x12 cab to save room space for another equipment.

i´ve heard that petrucci uses the 4x12 cab for distorted sounds and a 2x12 for clean sounds... thats correct? i mean, is the 2x12 cab better than the other one for clean sounds?

(btw although the equipment appears as sold it is really on the shop waiting for someone to buy it...so i can pick again the recto 4x12 cab if i want)

I can see no reason for a 4X12..... Grab a Bogner 2x12 or the Mesa Recto 2X12 and be done with it. The 2X12 isn't going to have quite as much low-end rumble as a 4X12 but you don't say you are going to be playing live a ton.

I'm a 2x12 (or sometimes even 1x12) man myself. The only pro I see in a 4x12 is that it pushes more air and thereby sounds bigger. But then again that isn't always a good thing when playing live either.

I owned a Boogie 4x12 for a year or 2 and only had to move it a few times before I decided it was to much of a pain in the a$$ to transport. The 2x12s can be easy carried by one person but the 4x12 requires at least 2 people or more..... From experience I found it to be more trouble than it was worth. Is portability more important to you or would you rather sacrifice that for a bigger sound. portability=2x12... bigger sound=4x12. Just tryin to give you something to think about.

mmmm the thing is which one is best suited for a studio use....i mean, maybe is too much to use a 4x12 cab in a room, wherer i won´t use a big volume....maybe its a waste of money to have such a cab for studio volume ain´t it?

2x12's are perfectly fine, but go for 4x12 if you like the sound better, deal with the volume of sound, and can deal with the consequences of having it.

LMAO studio volume? Sorry...never really heard such a thing. In a studio, you need to crank stuff up to where it sounds good!



That said, I just got a 4x12, and it's beefy as hell. I love it! I want another!

2x12's are perfectly fine, but go for 4x12 if you like the sound better, deal with the volume of sound, and can deal with the consequences of having it.

I personally find a 4x12 perfectly managable. I can't see too many applications of needing more- I can see wanting less- but I've never found a 2x12 that has the sound of a 4x12. Figure most 4x12s are around the 60 lb range. That's not a lot. My 4x10 bass cab is around 95 and my 2x15 is 115. You've got no room to complain.

If you're getting a stereo rack setup, a stereo 4-12 sounds the best, IMO.
Since it's a rack setup, a rack sits better on a straight cab, which also sounds beefier.
You'd be happy with a Marshall JCM900 stereo 1960BV (Vin 30's), or a Mesa large 4-12 stereo. That makes 2-12's per channel.

if the 2 x 12 is more preferable for you then go for it man. Its still gonna sounds really good and loud enough. And if you really need juts add another 2 x 12 if needed and voila half stack?

It depends on whether you own a van.

2x12 is plenty loud. The 4x12 can sound like 4 amps going at once, but it's not gonna do you a lot of good if you can't move it. I've never owned a 4x12. Always enjoyed playing them when I got the chance, but they're not really practical.

I especially liked playing an 80s Peavey 6x12. That thing was nuts. Certainly quantity over quality but it did the trick. A full stack would be even better!

Really, a well-made 2x12 should give you what you want. If you're gonna be in a studio, one eight-inch speaker would probably be enough most of the time.

nowadays some combo amps comes 2x12" like the Fender vibroverb and twin. TSL 602, blah blah blah.

I would agree that moving a 4X12" is a pain in the neck, but if its for the performance I don't mind, and of course, a van available. =)

ok, i mean by studio volume not to put the master to 10....cause most modern amps with high gain compresses a lot the sound so with the volume at 12 o´clock the sound starts to go overcompressed, correct me if i´m wrong (btw people uses to mic the amp to a pa, in that cases i haven´t seen any player putting the volume to the max neither)

about the van...i don´t own one, i own a car, but i think i can´t put there a full stack equipment, maybe i could put a 2x12 with the rack and the pedalboard and effect pedals.... but i´m interested most on the sound better than the cabs being bigger or not....thats cause probably i won´t move the equipment out of the studio/teaching room

so, i´d go for the 4x12 finally (well, ask the shop to return it home)

finally do you think i can find a better cab for this equipment than the rectifier 4x12?

I don't think you can beat a well constructed 4x12 with good speakers...there's just something about them...sound fuller, more crushing, push more air..

I'm willing to deal with moving it up and down stairs once a week when gigging...hey, that's what singers are for..HEHeEHeH
