2x15 cabs....?

I currently use a 4x12 loaded with WGS ET65's/Retro 30's
In an X pattern with my RedBear MK60.

I would like to get a second cab soon to run alongside
my 4x12 and am considering either buying or building a
2x15 cab. I'd like a huge bass/balls-y response and I'm
wondering if a 2x15 would be a good choice.

If I go this route (or any), the second cab would be
8ohms, with the amp running a total of 4ohms with
both cabs.

I'm in D standard and Drop C and our band's tone ranges
from tones like Down, CoC, Sleep, Crowbar, High on Fire, etc.

Thoughts from those with 2x15 experience or
speaker/impedance/frequency knowledge...?

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

I cant vouch for your suggested setup but i know someone who uses a multi size speaker cab. It was a 4x12 and he made a new baffle for 1x15 and 2x12.

It sounds pretty beasty. Far too bassy for my liking but that seems to be what you are going for

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

Never done it myself, but I've heard good things. Do you not have a 16 ohm jack on the Red Bear? That's how I would do it, two 8 ohm cabs in series = 16 ohms total.

Ah good point. Yes, the RedBear (or should I say GREENBear :) ) has 1 16ohm, 1 8ohm and 2 4ohm outputs.

What would be the difference in tone and/or output running a said 4x12 + 2x15 @ 4ohms compared to the same combo at 16ohms?

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

Love me any kind of 15 cab. The biggest sounding I have ever come across was an old Acoustic 2/15 ported in the middle. The 70s PV 15 cabs are great too, I currently use a 1/15 that I opened the back on, and tossed in an Emi Big Ben. Just huge sounding....

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

The 16 ohm tap is at the end of the coil in the transformer of your amp. The 4 and 8 are short taps. General consensus is that amps usually sound better using the highest output, although I'm sure there's some that disagree.

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

2x15 is my favorite speaker setup for guitar.

Try looking for an old Ampeg B-25B cabinet. 2x15, with two 8 Ohm speakers and a series/parallel switch. Put in two 4 ohm speakers and you can have 8 Ohms or 2 Ohms, instead of 16 or 4. Put in two 16 Ohm speakers, and you can have 8 Ohms or 32 Ohms. You'd be hard pressed to find as much quality in a cab for as little money.

I used to play an old Fender 400PS amp (435 watts, 145 watts to each of three speaker outputs) through three 2x15 cabs each loaded with two 15" D130F JBLs. Sound was awesome.......................................and loud!

HOLY ****!!!

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

On the new side, Eminence Big Ben tops my 15 list. Warm, with a really nice growl. I like a lot of old 15s.... CTS, Eminence from the 60s and 70s have always treated me right.

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

Here are my two "medium-sized" Ampeg cabinets...or at least the tops of them. They are taller than a 4x12, but not as tall as an 8x10. The one on the left is the B-25B that I mentioned (2x15), and the one on the right is a B-42X cab (4x12, with two tweeters added by a previous owner). A B-42X cab could easily be converted to 2x15, if you happen to find one cheap. I've had them for about 12 and 10 years, respectively. They are solid-ass cabs that sound great, and they cost me relatively little money.

Re: 2x15 cabs....?

A really cool cab is a Marshall DBS 7215. I picked one up for cheap not long ago. I planned on putting Big Bens or something similar, but the stock Emi's that came in there for bass sound GREAT for guitar. The only thing I noticed is across the room there was a little harsh high end so you have to dial the amp a little differently as the sound changes more than a 12" speaker across the room.

I love 15" speakers as well. I even mess around with some utah stereo speakers that were my dad's. I hooked up a jack to the back to plug the amp in at times. Very inefficient, but sounds really good for crusty blues and strange stuff. I'm having a custom 2x15 built by the same guy that made my 4x12s as well. It will match my 4x12s and be easier to transport lol.
