Okay, so it looks like I have my choices narrowed down to a Marshall TSL60, and a Fender Supersonic. I like the idea of the Laney TT50, but I can't find a dealer in the Toronto area.

Long story short, which of the three would be best suited to hard rock/metal, and a touch of bluesy stuff as well?

Re: 3 Channel Heads

Get the marshall it is real nice. An can do many things. IT will do the marshall sounds you hear on CD's and modern stuff. Perfect for what you want.

Re: 3 Channel Heads

I just got the Carvin V3. Amazing 3 channel amp, especially for the price. Tone is a cross between a Marshall and Boogie. I'd but this amp again over anything else out there.

Re: 3 Channel Heads

I use a Marshall TSL 100 which is a 3 channel head. The clean is so warm and icredible sounding. The "crunch" channel has a lot of bite to it for playing wide range of classic rock sounds to subtle bluesy overdrive. The "lead" channel has amazing over-the-top gain for wailing solos and heavier type rock and metal. I say go with the 3 channel amp. It'll prove to be very versatile.

Re: 3 Channel Heads

The marshall sounds like a good idea.. Steves Music on Queen st. may sell Laney, but to be honest you don't see any Laney around Toronto much at all...

Just a tip, try the new Traynor 3 channel Custom Special head... Oh my god what that head does for $1000 Canadian!!!

Re: 3 Channel Heads

Cool, I've heard a lot about those. Care to give a full review in a new thread?

(sorry for the thread hijack)

Sure, after this weekend. I just got it in 2 days ago, and already I'm amazed. I tried out Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers, Road Kings, B-52's, Peavey JSX, Marshall DSL and TSL, Fender Cybertwin, Peavey Valvekings, basically anything Guitar Center had, and I'd buy the Carvin V3 over any of these amps. Great tones right out of the box. I've been able to get Bogner, Marshall, Soldano. Boogie, Fender Diezel tones out of it so far. I want to experiment with changing the power tubes to see what else I can do- I hear changing them to 6L6's makes it a killer metal machine.

Truthfully, I don't think I can do justice to the amp in a review since I'm not a professional gigging musician. There's alot more reviews on harmonycentral.

Another good CHEAP 3 channel amp for the money is the B-52 AT-100. It sounded a bit flat compared to a Boogie, but it is the poor man's Triple Rectifier. I've read reliability problems with them though, and nightmares when it came to their customer service.

Yeah, I'd rather not deal with Steve's.... but I've seen that Traynor at L&M, and the guy that runs our rehearsal space has one too. I should try it out.

make sure when trying out the Traynor you try out the push buttons.... They offer Pre-set Scooped tones that totally change the tone on any channel you want....

Re: 3 Channel Heads

I just got the Traynor and it kills and only $1000. Great EL 34 amp. - Rob

it hink once more of these Traynor Custom Special amps get into stores and people try them out, a lot of us who like highgain multi channel amps will own one of these

Re: 3 Channel Heads

Look at some ENGLs.
The Screamer that I have is 4 channels, and they all sound great.

The Thunder is also a very nice ENGL amp, a bit more low gainish IMO.

If you can check them out, then do it.

The end of the road. Dos Bogneros.

Re: 3 Channel Heads

I should note that I won't be able to afford anything over $1500 CDN.

Re: 3 Channel Heads

The Carvin V-3 head is only $999. They have a 10 day return policy on it too if you don't like it.

I was just playing mine again and still love it. The only thing it needs is sone type of reverb through the effects loop

Re: 3 Channel Heads

Imnot sure I would play hard rock/metal through a Super Sonic and FWIW...a Marshall TSL is a much better door stop than it is an amp, the DSL is a good amp with some tweaking, good tube choices and a good cab but Marshall really lost it with the TSL...

Re: 3 Channel Heads

I've heard and played the V3. Great amp for the money. Not my sound, and too many knobs for my tastes, but I would get one over a Mesa Recto any day.

You're right. I'm still experimenting with all the knobs, features, switches, etc... If someone's in the market for a Mesa Recto they'd like it.

I have a Marshall JCM800 4211 and I can't copy the tone of that amp on the V3, for better or for worse. The V3 is alot clearer, articulate high gain with less noise more similar to a modded Marshall. I don't need overdrive/booster pedals with the V3.
