3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

ive done this with antiquity jag pups (very similar to a flat pole surfer) three of the same pup so no humcancelling or hotter bridge. i do have a tone wired to the bridge pup

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

i dont hear much difference between using rw/rp and not but i havent done a direct a/b comparison at the same pup heights either

You cannot hear any difference with RWRP pickups, because there’s no difference.

To demonstrate that, hook a phase switch up to a single pickup and listen while you reverse the polarity.

It's very easy to hear a difference if you compare the rwrp in the middle vs the neck. In the 1st instance, position 2 and 4 are quacky. In the 2nd instance, position 2 is less quacky and sounds like more of a blend between the 2 pickups.

I hate to burst your bubble, but both configurations are a blend of both pickups. The difference that you would hear if you for some reason felt inclined to pony up the extra money to A/B them could be chalked up to replacing the strings, not installing the pickups at identical heights, and manufacturing tolerances.

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

Yes facts are facts but my opinion is not unfounded since I've spent time both with the rwrp in the middle and in the neck. I've determined that with the rwrp in the neck position 2 has a different character than both position 2 that I remembered and position 4 in real time that's not placebo or due to other factors. You're the one getting bent out of shape and using conjecture.

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

I am pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference.

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

I bought a used G&L Legacy set up this way, but I quickly bought the RW/RP middle and the Custom Texas hot bridge. I like this set better, my stock Legacys have the RW/RP middle.

The T-H Ants are a little darker, richer and more powerful than the stock SSL-2s and the (later) G&L CLF-100 sets. I like the spank and bite of the stock pickups, but the Ants have their place too.

I've since set up a second Legacy with the Texas Hots, as above. Great sounding sets.

Johnny Marr & his tech Bill Puplett claim there is a difference because the RWRP pickup poles are working in opposition to the other two e.g. North set /South set /North Set... thoughts?

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

Doing three of the same would be replicating the original 50’s/60’s style, very appropriate if you are looking for that sound.

I also think there is a small (I mean small) difference in tone, partially due to the lack of hum (you can’t really separate hum from tone as much as you try) as well as the difference in magnetic field. Here’s a discussion on it from a decade ago: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?158919-R-W-R-P-vs-non-R-W-R-P

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

if there is a difference i would bet its because the different magnetic polarity of the middle pup vs the windings

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

Yes, here are the rough sketches from that thread.

Magnetic fields float North to South:

All pickups straight:

Rwrp middle:

Re: 3 neck Antiquity Surfs in a Strat?

The sketch is plainly wrong! The main field lines go near the surface from the north to south on each magnet. For the function of a pickup is important only the inner magnetic flux and the strength of magnetizing the strings on top.
