3 pickups VS 2 pickups ?

I have two of the same ibanez Roadstar , basswood body , rosewood fingerboard , 25.5 scale .
The first one has been modified and the previous owner did add a single coil in the middle , the other one just has two humbucker .
The modified one is really treebly on the high strings and has less high mid punch .
Do you think that it's because with the added p-u the vibrations of the string on the harmony table is damaged or is it simply because one is brighter than the other ?
(I suspect that vibration on harmony table is more important for high strings - and there is no more harmony table between the humbuckers in the fisrt one - and the body vibrations are more important for low strings )

I think that one is just a better piece of wood than the other. :)

Take out the mid pickup and find out what's going on. :burnout:

Re: 3 pickups VS 2 pickups ?

Well i think for the bright guitar , since the single coil is a Classic Strat Stack neck alnico2 , dead good , i will change the Jazz/Demon8 for a set of alnico2 buckers : AIIPneck and TB11 so it will be my blues/vintage guitar ! :cool3:
And no more harsh treebles !

Re: 3 pickups VS 2 pickups ?

played acoustic in a quiet room, what are the differences?
start with sets of new strings, then see how similar the action's are from the nut to the end of the fingerboard on both guitars.

i think the aph/classic stack/cc would be a nice combo

Re: 3 pickups VS 2 pickups ?

Yes it would be a nice combo but after all i experienced that no matter what you do , if the guitar have a bad point ( in this case a harsh high E and a lack of high mids ) all pickup won't be as good they would be in a better guitar .
So i'll check a few things and i will probably keep it for spare pieces as i have three of those guitar amongst them two unmodified .

Re: 3 pickups VS 2 pickups ?

This is the faulty guitar , and that's a shame because the guitar is beautiful .
But Jeremy as you asked , in a quiet room , unplugged it has thin highs as the other one witch is less pretty-all black with no mapple top-has thick highs , not thin at all .
I really think it's because there is no space for string vibrations to expand in this one, with all the plastic, poles, wires , magnets and holes in the harmony table .

Same old story- no tone unplugged, no tone plugged in.

To stick to the original question : do you think that high strings sound better in a guitar with only two pickups ?

Absolutely not.

YOu may have the same MODEL guitar but they are not the same guitar. The shrill one will likely sound shrill regardless.

3 pickup guitars do NOT automatically sound any shriller than 2 pickup guitars. By your logic a single pickup guitar should sound even fatter than a 2. ALso not the case.
