3 way switch for 1 humbucker

Re: 3 way switch for 1 humbucker

Unfortunately, no. For what you want, you need an on-off-on switch. That one is on-on-on.

Re: 3 way switch for 1 humbucker

Well, you can do it with an on/on/on switch, but in the middle position you will have both coils in parallel instead of the usual series. Depending on the pup and the tones you're after, that may be a big benefit.

Hey Doc. With the 6-terminal version of an on-on-on switch, (DPDT), yes. With the 3-terminal version that he linked to, (SPDT), no. ;)

Re: 3 way switch for 1 humbucker

IMO you'd have more variety on tap if you did series-parallel-split wiring with a DPDT on-on-on. That would be my choice.

Ah, I guess you're right...you ARE the guru.
I skipped over that link and just assumed it was a LP type 3 way. In which case you could get slug coil/both coils parallel/screw coil.

Re: 3 way switch for 1 humbucker

Yes, series/split/parallel would be my preference as well. I usually don't like the split tones, but find parallel very appealing. Many of my bridge pups have a mini toggle on/on to go from series to parallel with no split setting. But a DPDT on/on/on could give the OP all three choices.

The switch he linked to, and an LP-style switch, are electrically identical. I still don't see any way to get parallel in the middle position. Diagram? :)

P.S. I prefer parallel too.

I don't have capability to show a diagram. In a typical two bucker guitar, you would get bridge pup, both pups in parallel, and neck pup. But in this case you wire the humbucker as if it were two single coil pups. "Start" wire of each coil goes to ground. "Finish/hot" wires of each coil go to each of the throws of the switch. The pole of the switch is the output of the switch. In the middle position both "single coils" are on, and they would be in parallel just as the two humbuckers of a LP are in parallel in the middle position.

Re: 3 way switch for 1 humbucker

Oops! Brainfart. My head was stuck in "series" mode. You are correct, which means the original switch will work if he wants to do parallel in the middle position. :)
