so the other day my parents told me theyre gonna get me a guitar to bring to college as a graduation present from highschool. i got $300 for whatever one i want. what do you guys reccomend? im thinkin some SG or LP copy, nothing with a trem and probably no v's or rr's cause those might not do too will in a little dorm

Re: $300 to burn....

What about a Fender Mexican Strat or Fat Strat? They have trems, but they stay in tune.

Re: $300 to burn....

You could always get one of those nice RondoMusic Samick/Agile's, and use the spare change to "Duncanize" it.

Would probably be a nice axe, with less to fear if stolen or damaged. ;)

Re: $300 to burn....

yeah im thinkin agile if i go for an lp copy. and i dont really want a strat shape.

Re: $300 to burn....

agile prestige 3000...

somebody find a better guitar for $300 bucks...i dare ya!!! LOL!!!

Re: $300 to burn....

ArtieToo and Hoss beat me to the Agile punch. I played my friend's Agile doublecut about a week ago.. pups weren't stellar, but the finish and workmanship of the body were excellent (not perfect, though). For $200-$300 it's a great deal.

Re: $300 to burn....

300$ See if you can add 150$ from your own cash or some other source and get a Jackson DK-2

OMFG, did I just RECOMMEND, and thereby endorse, an IMPORT??? Somebody please shoot me before I´m too drunk to know who I am :D:D:D

Re: $300 to burn....

A couple options...one is to throw in some extra cash yourself and pick up a PRS Tremonti SE. I think they go for about $450 new, you can probably pick up a used one on Ebay for less. I played one last week, and I was very impressed. I never would've guessed it was a Korean guitar if I hadn't already known.

Before you buy a cheap knock-off, take a look at some used Peavey T-60's on Ebay. You can pick one up in mint condition for less than $300. They are pretty unique sounding guitars, kind of like a cross between a Strat and a Les Paul. They were made in America in the late 70's and early 80's, and they were the first guitar to be built using CNC machines, which makes them an interesting piece of guitar history. They have two nice sounding humbuckers, and the guitar was built with coil split and phase switch controls. You'd get lots of different sounds from a T-60.

College is not such a crazy place. I have had my gibson SG standard in the dorms all year with no problems. Just keep your guitar in your case to prevent damage and put it under your bed or lock it in your closet if you are afraid of it getting stolen. I have not heard of anything getting ripped off all year. I would reccomend using the 300 to buy a pod for practicing at low volumes. I think that this is the real problem that you will encounter. Just my 2 cents.

Re: $300 to burn....

If you leave your explorer at home in place of another cheap guitar it will be mad at you for leaving it. lol. Seriously though it may be hard to stay away from home knowing that your good amp and good guitar wait for you there. The school year is almosed over and I find myself missing my JCM 800 more than my family :smack: .

Re: $300 to burn....

I see from your sig that you're already familiar with Aria. You may want to consider an Aria Pro II. I haven't played a recent one but I have one that's almost 20 years old that I bought for $250. The way that thing has held up and been able to keep up with the mods I've thrownn at it through the years amazes me. Solid workmanship for a cheap price. You could probably find one on Ebay for even cheaper.
