Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

Are you asking if it is staggered or not? Or if it is available either way...

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

Isn't this a traditional covered Tele neck pickup

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

I have to admit, I've never had the cover off one of these, and I've never seen a picture of one with the cover off. Damn, now I am curious.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

The Tele neck pickups I've seen from custom winders that do partial or coverless have all been flat......but this is merely anecdotal evidence.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

the ones ive pulled the cover off have all been flat but i cant say for sure. im not really a fan of tele neck pups so dont deal with them often.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

In general, Tele neck pickups do not have staggered magnets.

I doubt that the Duncan pickup is an exception.

This is a question for the Duncan company, directly, if you must have a definitive answer. But we can say that a staggered Tele neck pickup would be the exception rather than the norm.

funny:D
would have thought somebody knew for sure.
i would put my money on unstaggered.

so, seems to me Leo Fender did quite a sloppy job in '54 when he introduced the stagger for the Bridge, but left out the neck:D
that, or maybe just the aftermarket pickup makers:D

The Tele neck pickup is one hardly ever seen uncovered. So it stands to reason that not many have knowledge of what is underneath the cover.

And I'm sure Leo got it right with the method behind the stagger during the design process. He would have had a lot more insight into what the pickup had to do after all. Even if you'd engaged in a small amount of thought about metal covers, vibration, microphonic feedback and gaps that a stagger would have created would tell you all you need to know about how to make such a pickup.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

However Teles kept the neck cover after the introduction of the strat. Suggesting that it was a choice, even if the option was impossible before the strat pickup was designed.

You seem overly determined to find any excuse to make out the guitar was of poor design......why is that?

SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

Well nobody forced him to keep the chrome cover. he didn't use it on the strats.
the cover wasn't vintage or traditional back then.

still no answer from the SD support

The cover is a shield. The telecaster electronics from end to end were designed to reduce noise and be easy to repair/maintain, and IME it works quite effectively.

Removing the shield later, eg on strats, I believe was to brighten the sound, but at the expense of a little more noise.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

To my knowledge reading about him, Leo was quite practical and very pragmatic. He was into electronics, he was not a musician or artist. He solved problems, but only when a problem manifested. If he staggered the bridge and not the neck, he was trying to solve a problem that only bridges were known to have at the time.

IME I haven’t heard a Tele neck where I thought something was so wrong that it needed staggered poles to solve. But I think the cover might mask any nuances that staggering might provide.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

ok, now i think i can understand.
i have no experience with small finger board radii combined with single Coils and stagger. (only one gretsch with filtertrons and i don't see any advantage with that radius, only cons. so no more small radi for me).
So my thoughts are highly theoretical (instead of pragmatic) and i have no way of telling if the stagger is audible on a tradtional tele.

I think the unique sound of a Tele neck pickup, to me, is something I don't particularly like, so I never got to the point of comparing the details between them.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

The pickups are made with a darker colored coating on the wire, it almost has a dark grey look with the copper wire hue in it. The poles are NOT staggered and the potting of the pickup almost looks as if it was dipped only enough to allow the wax to get into the coil and settle into the upper portion of the coil I.E. It was dipped and then laid on the cover's face ( string side ) to allow the residual wax to flow into the upper portion of the pickup.

Re: SD VINTAGE TELE NECK STR-1 staggered or non staggered?

Let us now how this pickup works out for you.

Thanks for the update! It really helps to have some time to see how a pickup works. First responses never tell the whole picture.
