498t

I've got a 498t here and I was wondering if I swap out the magnet with a ceramic, does that turn it into a 500t or are there differences in the windings etc between these two pickups?

Re: 498t

Some say the 498T & 500T are the same thing as far as windings, others say they're different but close. Either way, the 498T should be a very good ceramic HB.

Re: 498t

I'll maybe give it a try. I had wanted a 500t for an epiphone flying v I have to play metal with but I ended up with a 490r/498t set in another deal. If the ceramic in the 498t works out, to make the 490r with it, should a person go with an A5 or a ceramic in it too?

Re: 498t

I don't know if the windings are the same or not, but the 500t has 3 ceramic magnets like the Invader does. With one ceramic magnet, it would sound much similar to a Duncan Custom, which is definitely not a bad thing.

are you sure your not thinking of the gibson dirty fingers, which is the one that supposedly had the 3 magnets invader-style?

The 500T has three ceramic magnets. They are very close, if not the same wind as the 498T; it's a matter of some debate.

No reason to buy a 500T when you have a 498T. Just use a normal ceramic (not extra thick). Both of these have a little bit of a gritty sound to them , which gives them more character and flavor than the average ceramic.

I put A5's in my 490R's, which makes them brighter & better defined. A ceramic would work there too, and be very close to a 496R. Either A5 or ceramic will give you good tones.

When you swap magnets in a 498T/490R set, you can get some excellent tones. These are high quality PU's.

What would an A8 in the 498T do to it? I can see I'm going to have to do some swapping. I'm interested to hear the results. My other V has a super distortion and a PAF Pro in it so I'm curious to put the two head to head.

I have an A8 in a 498T (SG) and a 500T (V). Keeps the output & muscle, fills in the mids, and leaves just enough treble for cut. To me, a much better way to warm a PU than an A2.

The problems with Gibson PU's are that their magnet choices aren't always the best, they make some bizarre pairings (bright 498T/dark 490R), and they don't have the selection or creativity of some of their competitors. But the quality's there. With a Gibson PU, I can get great tones; I just have to tweak them first.

totally agree, my stock(a2) 490 set sounded like garbage in 2 of my guitars(sg faded and dot studio) just a mushy mess, cleaned it right up with a couple of a5 mags at first, then a5N/a8B for a stronger bridge. great set that can often be had for cheap used.

Re: 498t

The 498T was much more to my liking with an A2 mag. The A5 was waaaay to strident and aggressive too my ears, and not aggressive in a good way.

+1. That A5 adds treble a 498T doesn't need. Tried to warm it with an A2, but that took it too far, and made the top end too rounded for me. Went with an A8 that gave a nice edge.
