totally agree, my stock(a2) 490 set sounded like garbage in 2 of my guitars(sg faded and dot studio) just a mushy mess, cleaned it right up with a couple of a5 mags at first, then a5N/a8B for a stronger bridge. great set that can often be had for cheap used.

+1. If we can figure this out, what is the deal with Gibson? We're not rocket scientists. I don't think any of their A2 neck HB's give a clear, articulate tone with the stock magnets. But with mag swaps, the 490T/490R and 498T/490R are really pretty good PU's, that are usually way underrated.
