That is almost a twin of the Bassman as far as the cab goes. I wasn't familiar with this amp, so I looked it up and GC still has a page for it even though it's no longer made of for sale by them.

"The Fender Blues DeVille 410 Reissue Guitar Amp, a reinterpretation of the classic Bassman amp, produces 60W into 4-10" Eminence alnico-magnet speakers with an all-tube preamp and power amp. The tube complement features 3 - 12AX7s and 2 - 6L6s. The Blues DeVille has Normal and Drive channels with independent Gain and Master for the Drive channel and a Bright switch for Normal channel. It also has an effects loop, reverb, presence, master volume, 3-band EQ, and Standby switch. Original Blues series styling includes chrome control panel, vintage chicken-head knobs, and, of course, genuine Fender tweed covering."

What does the drive channel on it sound like? Has it replaced some or all of your fuzz boxes? What overdrive sound (that I might have heard) is it like? Do you like the amp?

I Guess the Hot Rod DeVille III is the current version of this. It's kinda cool. It's got a tweed era shaped cab, but the modern black/silver coverings. I've actually wanted to try one of these, but none of the local shops has had one yet.

I’ve always wanted a Super Reverb, and the 4x10 Mesa Lonestar looks cool as well.

I don't see a 4x10 Combo on the Mesa Lonestar page. (In general they seem like they have fewer combos these days other than the 1x12, which is their signature configuration).

They do build a really nice looking 4x10 open-back cab that I've had my eye on.

Here's a picture of the 4x10 combo, which is listed as "out of production" on their site.

And just for the sake of completeness, here is the other Mesa 4x10 cabinet, which is clearly intended for bass players (but then, so was the "Bassman").
Anyone ever tried using this with a guitar head and a Strat or something?
My bass player used my Orange AD-140 and thought it was an excellent bass amp (except for the head threatening to topple off the cab from all the sound and vibration).

A while ago, on a similar topic at a lesser forum someone sent me a link to this VHT Pit Bull, which I have never heard or seen IRL.

So, I don't know as much about early Marshall's as I'd like to. But there were variations going on back then with the combos, too.
This one is the so-called "block letter" style and is captioned:
MARSHALL JTM45 BLUESBREAKER 4x10 BLOCK LOGO COMBO

Marshall JTM45.jpg

From Wikipedia I learn:

According to the most widely accepted story, Eric Clapton wanted an amp that would fit in the boot of his car, so he asked Jim Marshall (whose store in London he frequented) to make him a combo amp powerful enough to use on stage. According to Robb Lawrence's The Early Years of the Les Paul Legacy, Jim Marshall initially gave Clapton a Model 1961 with 4×10" speakers, which was soon replaced with a 2×12" Model 1962.[2] Clapton used the combo amplifier with his 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard, allegedly[5] in combination with a Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster,[2] which resulted in the creation of a texture of sound that would become regarded as iconic in the realm of blues oriented rock.[6]

Marshall's Model 1961/1962 combo amplifier entered the market at an affordable price—one third cheaper than a Vox AC30 and half the price of a Fender Bassman combo.[1][7] Its reputation was cemented when Clapton, who had rejoined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, used one to record Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton—a set of sessions now widely regarded as "historic".[8] After that, the combo became known as the "Bluesbreaker."[1] The model was discontinued in 1972.[7]

Due to its iconic status amongst collectors, the Bluesbreaker has become one of the most collectible and valuable vintage guitar amplifiers. According to a 2011 Vintage Guitar article ranking the twenty-five "most valuable amplifiers", the 1966/1967 Bluesbreaker is seventh on the list, with solid original examples fetching prices between US$8,300 and US$10,000.

Those make fine diagonal 2x12s with a baffle change too.

They also shipped a few with a diagonal 2x12 baffle, the 1966A/B. I think one would be great with my Mini Jube, but I already have a nice ported 2x12 and don't really have room for more cab(s).

I've played guitar through their older Diesel 4x10 and the 1x15 (not at the same time). Those bass cabs sounded pretty good with a POD running into a PA amp, or simply playing clean through a guitar or bass amp. Words can hardly describe how horrible they sounded for any sort of overdriven guitar tones.

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

That's a very nice looking cab. Did you build it yourself? If so, you have some very nice woodworking chops. It looks like it's set up to be used with a closed back. Is that how you run it?

Another buddy of mine has built a 2x12 cab with three vertical panels that allow him to "tune" the amount of openness. The panels are not exactly the same size, a wider or narrower one can be used in the lower position. He says that even the two inches difference in the height of this bottom panel is audible. (So, he ends up running the top in place and the slightly larger bottom in place and the middle open, similar to a classic combo amp setup.

Have you experimented with "semi-open" like this?

No I guess you missed it but it's built by Fusco Cabinets , I got it thru RockNRollAmps. I run it 1/3 open across the middle. The top and bottom sections have matching panels. It's built really well...

The drive channel on this sounds like a slightly drier (reverbwise) version of the clean channel up to a Gain level 6, then at around 8 you finally get some drive and at 10 it is finally geeting some balls.
It does sound really good with od pedals like the Boss Blues Driver or TS808, TS9 and such, but so does the clean channel which also has a Bright switch for darker guitars. I use the Bright sometimes on a 335...unnecessary on my EJ strat.
The drive is VERY easy to balance with the clean...simply set the drive master volume to be equal to the clean volume. This true up to volume 4 or 5, so probably true across the dial (if your ears can take more than 5 which is very loud)
I practiced for three hours today at volume 4 by keeping the guitar volume on 3, so very usable even with 12ax7 pre as opposed to modding to lower output or using the second input.

Met Rob Lawrence at a blues jam in san diego a few years ago. His advice is what led me to 4x10 configuration though I had to figure out about alnico from inference..Rob said.."the best guitar sound I have ever heard was 4 10" jensens" . Took a while to learn that all the old jensens were paper former alnico, but I learned.
And yes the guy can play!

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

Another manufacturer who seems really into the 4x10 is Dr. Z. Not only does he make his 4x10 Backline cabinet, he has four (!!) different private-label 10" speakers you can choose to put it in.

One downside to this size cab is that at 24x24x10" a lot of common full size heads are not going to fit on it.

Yep, pretty rare. I’ve only ever seen one in person. A head and open back 4x10 cab makes much more sense!

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

Some nice cabs in this thread.

I've got one of these, but it needs work. I fired it up for a few minutes and it sounded sweet. Can't wait to restore it.

That's very nice. Yamaha has made some great audio gear over the years. Their solid state stereo amps of that era are legendary for never dying.

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

Yup. I've got quite a few Yamaha pieces. This one mainly needs all the pots cleaned. And maybe a few new caps.

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

More of less.......

I know this probably doesn't count, but here's my 8x10. A Fender Bassman 810 Pro. Bought it over a year ago brand new for significantly less than the cost of the same 4X10.
No, I don't take it anywhere.

I used to have a Marshall 8x10 that I used with an old Marshall PA 100 head. :D

I have a 70s orange stripe Randell Commander. The thing sounds sick with the right stomp. It really shines with cleans especially acoustic guitar. This is an internet pic of one. Mine is at my friend's house he has been using it since his Marshall blew up.

What have you found to be the right stomp(s)?
I'm always playing with pedals to get different sounds for the combo above.

I'm using a Maxxon OD 808. I love this little box. It's a true overdrive, it doesn't fuzz up. I have described the sound as "opening" with it on.
It's the first box of the three I use and I use it the most of any of them. I can get an instant little volume boost by hitting it, and by turning the vol. on my guitar down keep a pretty clean tone, to "keep up" with over enthusiastic drummer and 'the bass player' (TBP). But more frequently I use it with the volume on the guitar kept the same and it sort of moves the Bassman from super-clean fender to gently overdriven slightly Marshally (but-still-chiming). (The virtual second "crunch" channel my Bassman).

BY THE WAY: YOUR PICTURE DOESN'T SHOW UP FOR ME. Can you re-load it?

Re: 4x10 cabs and combos: show 'em if ya got 'em

I am unable to post photos, but I do have a Trace Elliot Bonneville 4X10 that I replaced the bottom 2 Celestions with Weber Alnico Californias. I also mounted a Peavey Rockmaster vertically on the inside of the bottom cab panel for over the top drive.
