4x10 or 2x12?

Hey, I wanted to know which of these speaker combinations sounds better for a Fender DeVille? I tried out a Fender tube amp that I fell in love with, but I didn't catch the specs or anything. I'm assuming it was the Deville as it was +$600, but the casing was purple-ish. It was weird, but it was very nice.

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

both sound ok, but there is a difference for sure. do you like 10's or 12's?

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

Well, I didn't get to experiment with the speakers, I only did with the amp.:poed: But, I'm going to need this for live playing, so I am assuming the 4x10 would be better?

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

I'm going to guess that the 4 x 10 version might have a slightly louder and slightly cleaner tone than the 2 x 12 version. Just a guess based on my experience with Fender Super Reverbs (4 x 10), Vibrolux Reverbs (2 x 10) and Pro Reverbs ( 2 x 12) and Twin Reverbs (2 x 12). But the quality of the speakers would have a huge impact on the sound. Four crummy 10's will sound muddier and weaker than Two great 12's....and vice versa.

Between my 2x12 cab and my 4x10 cab, the 2x12 sounds better for leads, and the 4x10 sounds better for playing rhythm; however, am pretty sure this has more to do with the specs of the speakers.

That's what I would have expected. 4 10's can sound very clear and bright and cleanish...great for cleanish rythym. Aspen Puttman describes the 4 x 10 Fender Super Reverb as having the ultimate rythym tone...but I always liked the warmer easier on the ears tone of my 2 x 12 Pro Reverb. There is a diff in output trannys between those two amps though with the Super Reverb having a bigger output tranny (basically a 2 ohm version of the 4 ohm blackface Bassman tranny) and a few more watts of power. Well, I'd like something for leads but at the same time, I need some definition in my chords. Has anyone encountered this purple amp?:banghead:

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

The 4x10 has a lot more coneage than the 2x12. I always liked the big punch of cabs with 4 (or more) 10's.

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

BAH! You're young. Get one of each.

And when you get older, you'll get a combo that you can easily pack in and out.:Dd

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

Well....I settled on a 2x12 AND a 4x12. Depends on what YOU play, how YOU
play it, and what sounds good to YOU. In my opinion, this is a choice that's all about YOU. Speaker choices are the big decision here. Ask others/buddies for opinions on YOUR tone if you can't step out of the mix far enough to hear
YOURself.
IMHO of course.

Re: 4x10 or 2x12?

I've got the 4x10 deville and i too really love the hot rod series. This speaker config sounds really good in a band situation and has a good stage prescence. Furthurmore it will be louder than a 2x12 and have a quiker response time due to the nature of the 10s. Ultimately it depends on your personal preference, but i would go with the tens.
