Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?
I chose to go with a 4x10 instead of a 2x12 or 4x12 a few years ago when I made my cabinet..
This was before I knew anything about speakers and voicing but still I beleive I made a really good decision.
At that time I was using pedals (DS-1, SD-1 MT-2) into a Digitech RP300. The RP300 tended to get undefined and mushy. I didn't like it through 12"s, even though it has a nice loose bass, there was just no definition..But a buddy happened to have some 4x10 thing, and when I mic'ed it I felt like I found some guitar tone secret. I've never seen anyone play a 4x10, yet It was perfectly was I was looking for, rich, flexible for Metal, or pop rock, leads/solos.
So I put together my own 4x10 with some emminence (do not know which model, I knew nothing when I put this together and still haven't checked for numbers).
I do not own a Mesa or Marshall tube, but I've gone away from digital and now have the solid state marshall head. I think my speaker keeps it in the realm of being acceptable. My speaker brings lots of mids which keeps a lot of weight in the tone. I've played several different solid state amps into this baby and I've never had any problems with them being too sterile or thin. Very tight and responsive bass and just roaring mids, that is what my 4x10 means to me. Treble is very balanced, not too much, not too little.
PS: I'd also like to say that the small weight and size of the cabinet are nice aspects also. It is a good match for my relatively small head too.
