4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

My JMP 20 W Marshall gets really loose base from my greenbacks and G12Hs (?), so I've been running it through a Mesa 4X10. How I came by the Mesa is an interesting story, which I'll bore you with somewhere else. I know everyone says 410s have tighter base, but this transformed the "lead & base" channel into a searing - and suddenly useful - channel, especially with my Seymour Duncan Hotstack equiped Tele. It's great for blues on a Les Paul Alnico II magnet neck 'bucker too. Very nice. It's small, "light weight", and has a great tone. Anybody else using 410s on guitar ?

I use a mahogony 4 x 10 made by a little company called Mongotone. I have posted about this cab before, but I'll just say it's awesome. The fact that it's made from real wood helps, but I sold all my other cabs 'coz this thing sounds so good! The tone is excellent, bass response is very nearly as big as the Boogie 4 x 12, but the real advantage is the spread of sound... i.e.. no matter where I stand in a live situation I can hear myself.. unlike the very directional Mesa 4 x 12. I've recently done a gig using my mates old Marshall 4 x 10 and that was a killer sound too... It's like no one knows how good this configuration can be????? Good luck to you bud.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I chose to go with a 4x10 instead of a 2x12 or 4x12 a few years ago when I made my cabinet..

This was before I knew anything about speakers and voicing but still I beleive I made a really good decision.

At that time I was using pedals (DS-1, SD-1 MT-2) into a Digitech RP300. The RP300 tended to get undefined and mushy. I didn't like it through 12"s, even though it has a nice loose bass, there was just no definition..But a buddy happened to have some 4x10 thing, and when I mic'ed it I felt like I found some guitar tone secret. I've never seen anyone play a 4x10, yet It was perfectly was I was looking for, rich, flexible for Metal, or pop rock, leads/solos.

So I put together my own 4x10 with some emminence (do not know which model, I knew nothing when I put this together and still haven't checked for numbers).

I do not own a Mesa or Marshall tube, but I've gone away from digital and now have the solid state marshall head. I think my speaker keeps it in the realm of being acceptable. My speaker brings lots of mids which keeps a lot of weight in the tone. I've played several different solid state amps into this baby and I've never had any problems with them being too sterile or thin. Very tight and responsive bass and just roaring mids, that is what my 4x10 means to me. Treble is very balanced, not too much, not too little.

PS: I'd also like to say that the small weight and size of the cabinet are nice aspects also. It is a good match for my relatively small head too.

Yeah I wanna try these some day too .... James Byrd uses a 6X10 and has a pretty awesome tone ....

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Anyone who thinks the Fender Hot Rod amps suck probably hasn't tried the 4x10 DeVille. Something about that amp with that particular speaker arrangement really kicks butt ... much moreso than the Deluxe or the 2x12 DeVille. It seems to have smoother bass and low mid response.

That's about the extent of my knowledge on 4x10 cabs.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

in my expirience, 10" alnico speakers are... amazing, but the ceramic ones kinda leave something to be desired

then again i think the exact opposite about 12" speakers. Never played an alnico one i was really impressed with

someone should make a 1x12/2x10 cab, with 1 g12h30 and 2 of those jensens they're putting in the bassman RI

that'd be sick

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

once again, i reckons bassists are much more experimental with their gear than guitarists!

my next planned purchase is an empty 2x10 cab.. fit some nice celestions in and use it mostly for bass but guitar as well (seeing as it's there..)

with the experimental thing - think about active pickups, flatwounds, solid state preamps, that kinda stuff.. most bassists tend to be more up for having a go!

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I wonder the same about Fender and Sunn's 3x12 vertical cabs. I can't even find one of those.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Man my favorite combination is 4x10's! Bassman's, Super Reverbs! If I could find a 4x10 cab to match my Dr. Z I'd totally play through it instead of the 2x12..or maybe in addition to! That would be so tight. 4x10 and 2x12....got it all man!

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I generally dig 10's. Punchy like Mohamid Ali!

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Just when I settle on what cab I'm going to get for my new Orange. You guys have to spring this crap on me!

4x10's not being as directional really interests me. I know I hate when I go to shows I can usually only hear the guitarist on the side I am standing (I am a Front Row Junkie).

And a Splawn 4x10 is the same cost as a Standard 2x12...hmmm.

Are 4x10's much smaller than 4x12's? The main problem with my 4x12 was it being too big to fit in cars, and it was just a pain to carry.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

If I had to choose one amp tbhat I would consider to be "perfect," it would be the Super Reverb. Also something about those Bassmans that are just magical. I'm more of a fan of the 2x12s just from experience, but a blackface 4x10 combo will probably be my next amp.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

4x10s actually aren't much larger than 2x12s. Next time you go to a guitar shop, check out the size difference between a Fender Hot Rod 212 and a Fender Hot Rod 410. You'll see what I mean.

Check out www.mongotone.co.uk ... awesome cabs!

4x10 This is it. In our opinion this is the mother of all cabs. The biggest, fattest most ambient chimming tone monster you will ever find on this planet. A sweet top, tight mids and a spacious bottom. What more could you ask for. This cab is available with Celestion Vintage G10 or Jensen P 10 Rs. We recomend the Celestions. 140 watts of handling power at 8 ohms. More headroom that the Grand Canyon.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I use a Marshall 1965B loaded with 2 ceramic Celestion G10L-35s & 2 alnico Weber Blue Pups.....My Overbuilt Clubber sounds AMAZING now, since I swapped out 2 Jensens for the Blue Pups :headbang:
