50's Humbucker Wiring Schematic?

I'm currently in a wiring project - 2 Humbuckers, 2 Vols, 2 Tones + 3-Way Switch.

(1) Can you point me to a schematic for 50's wiring?

(2) Tell me what's different about the performance? What to expect?

Re: 50's Humbucker Wiring Schematic?

The 50's mod puts the volume first in the circuit rather than the tone. The result is better clarity and a brighter sound. Another side effect is that the tone control has a much greater range than normal. Usually tone controls have a pretty narrow range where you have a small sweet spot. With the 50's mod the control is very fine grained.

I have this schematic the important part being how the pots are wired.

With the 50's wiring the tone pot comes after the volume pot, thus, its effect is reduced by the amount the volume is decreased. However, in the so called modern wiring (honestly speaking I cannot see anything modern about it, maybe it has to do with mass production), the tone pot comes before the volume pot, thus, its effect is independent of the volume.

Therefore, when you decrease the volume on your guitar, you lose less highs with 50's wiring.

One more thing: That whole thing is not reserved for LPs. I have my teles and strats all with 50's wiring.

C'mon it is much simpler.

BTW when volume and tone are both at 10, there is not a single difference between the two wiring schemes. They are identical. The whole issue happens when the volume is rolled off.

Interesting twist ... my new Washburn guitar was a combination of those two wiring jobs (modern & 50s). Simply put the hot leads from the pickups were swapped with the hot leads from the switch for both pickups. The tones sections were the same as the modern and were hooked to the left lug of the volume controls. However, since the two wires (pickups & switch) were swapped, it was doing the 50's style volume thing.

Swapped those two wires on both volume controls and I have the modern wiring now ... which seems to suit me better ... controls react like the rest of my guitars. Either volume cuts the sound (like a master). Really didn't change the tone or the tone range that much.

So I'm happy.

Whatever works for you is cool. Afterall there isn't a correct answer on this. It is all about tastes.

I may be a little late but here's a 50s wiring schem. of the whole thing, switch and everything that I made for the Thursday Burst site...
