Outside of the colors, are these amps sonically different than anything Marshall is making, or is it just a common amp that was let loose in a paint factory?

It is a stock 2203, which is lame. Steve Jones was playing Twins and Music Man 2x12. When his solo album took off in the late 80s he knew he would be doing bigger stages and his amps had miles on them. Billy Duffy from the Cult had his Harry Kolbe modded 800s in storage, collecting dust so he sold them to Jones. These amps do not have the cascading gain and additional filter caps Kolbe typically did as Marshall mods. Marshall missed an opportunity here, they should have included the mods and released a black version like Steve used. Black Kolbe Marshalls would sell.
Well damn, then it is really lame. It isn't close to what they ever used, and there isn't anything special apart from the clown vomit color. Fools and their money, I guess.
Listen to NTB again, the multitracking Steve Jones did was amazing, especially for a person who had never been in a studio before. It is a well-engineered album, especially when compared to other albums from the same period.
I haven't listened to them in years, put on Pretty Vacant and you're absolutely right. It's well mixed, clearly there was effort put in by the engineers. That's kind of hilarious.

Also haven't listened to them in years. For some reason, they were living in the back of my mind as early punk, therefore crappy guitar tones. That does sound pretty decent though.
