5150 2x12 combo.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

Thanks for telling me whats up with a hotter bias. I was wondering what the tonal difference would be besides being sort of cleaner.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

Personally, I'd go with the Classic 50 and get a MI Audio Crunch Box for high gain stuff. I've had a 5150 Combo for 10 years. Most of that time it's sat in my closet because I outgrew high gain stuff and to get the most tone from it, it has to be loud!!!
I get much more use and enjoyment from a cranked 5 watt Champ.
I've found that it's best to have a good clean sound which can be dirtied up with some pedals, than and amp that can only do high gain. The 5150 Combo is stupid heavy too. Not much of a problem if your an at home player, but after moving it around a few times, you'll see what I mean.

For what the 5150 Combo does, it does very well. But it's mostly a one trick pony. The Classic 50 can be used for all kinds of applications.

Wow, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a huge Van Halen freak, but I sold my 5150 combo. It was a real trick switching to a low-gain amp for about the first 2 weeks, but then everything came back together.

That said, knowing what I know now, I wish I'd kept it, just for the sake of swapping the overly bassy high wattage speakers out for some Greenbacks, and maybe stuffing some Yellow Jackets in there to use EL34 power tubes.

Ah well.

What's with the whole yellowjacket thing? I thought the 6L6 socket accepted EL34s without anything more than a bias job?
