Well in my old band i rehearsed with 5150s and that had badass metal tone! Loved it. I doubt you could go far wrong with either. Ill let someone chime in who has played all the amps, but you cant go wrong with a 5150 for metal.

Dead Skin Slayer traded his XXX for a 5150 for what it's worth.

I vote 5150 'cuz it's more straight-up and doesn't have that assinine trucker girl grill thing. I don't see how anybody thought THAT was a good idea.

It depends on what kind of metal tone you're going for, really.

The 5150 sounds beastly, raw, organic, and grinds like a mother****er. Think Arch Enemy, Carcass, Soilwork, In Flames, God Forbid, Kreator, The Haunted, Strapping Young Lad, etc.

The XXX is more refined... it's like the bastard child of a Rectifier and a 5150, with a Marshall for a nanny. It's tighter, cleaner, smoother. Think Nevermore, Darkest Hour, etc. Not as widely used as the 5150, but just as beastly. It has a MUCH better clean channel, and is definitely more versatile.

I traded my XXX for a the 5150 because I, for the most part, prefer the more raw, organic, crunchy tone out of the 5150, and don't use cleans that much.

I do really miss the XXX, however. If I had the extra cash, I'd definitely buy another, or save up for a JSX. I've been using a ton more cleans lately, though, and probably will be using them about as much as distortion once my G-Major arrives (Heavily effected clean guitars + Tapping = the ultimate atmospheric tool), so I might actually pull a Sikth and replace my 5150 with a JSX. Only time will tell.

In short, you'll be happy as hell with either! Also, Musiciansfriend has the 40W XXX combo's for 500 right now... killer price.

The 5150. I think I put in my biggest dissapointment list which I shouldnt have. Today if I have time I will be buying the combo for $200.

Love the original 5150 stack i own..... at a studio i used to go to they also had a 5150 stack.... great amps!!! I have yet to try the 5150II version, but i hear it has a few tweeks to it that are nice... but for the money a 5150 is killer!

Darkest Hour actually uses the 5150.

I saw them 3 month ago... kris uses a JSX and mike, forgot it maybe it was it the krank! It was a very small location but sound was amazing though they didn't make a real soundcheck and again the location sucked...

*edit* I saw them in august

Kris used XXX's on the "Undoing Ruin" album and the other guy uses Marshalls. He was getting in a JSX to try out after the Undoing Ruin album came out, I'll let you know what they use live when I see them in March.

My mistake. I figured they used the 5150 because i saw them in an ad for the new 6550 head and they are holding it. But now that i think about it, Mike Schleibaum uses Krank im pretty sure, im not too positve about the other guy.
