5150/6505 SUCKS?!

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

Sounds like a prescription for a good noise gate.

K. But a good noise gate can be set to kick in when you mute the strings, without killing the sustain of purposely held notes.

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

5150/6505 muddy or won't cut through? It's either:

1) User error
2) Something wrong with the amp/tubes
3) Something else in the signal path messing with you

:)

P.S.- I've owned the original 5150 2x12" combo and the 6505+ head...no such issues with either one

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

Don't underestimate cabinet and volume, while some amps do bloom in the low end when turned up I've found other amps have no upper midrange when too quiet, also v30s cut like hell so other cabinets may sound terrible with amps that don't have similar qualities. They midrange control sounds like it adds plenty of body and mud to the sound so turning it up probably made it worse.

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

As said by others, the mids were likely set too high, and if it was the 400W MF cab not the 280W that would explain a lot (Though even the 280w is going to be bassier than a standard sized cab)

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

I am not sure you can judge a 5150's sound very well (or any high-powered head) at Guitar Center's volume levels. Steve Morse sounded good with them, although they are not my style of amp. There are a lot of other amps that have come out since that series that might 'cure' that problem at lower volume levels.

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

My guitarist uses a 6505+ through the matching cab and no issues with clarity came up where it couldn't be simply dialed out (he's a gainphile). I have the opposite experience, I always found them to have a very percussive sound, especially that green channel. Red channel can get mushy pretty quick, but the settings you're describing should still be bright as hell.

Re: 5150/6505 SUCKS?!

Higher post gain.
Higher pre gain.
Use the well known 6/6/6 eq setting.
The 6505 needs a boost pedal to get the tightness you hear on recordings from them.

I think it was like a marshall MX or something, so crap cab. Maybe the midrange was the problem
