Hey how are the old 5150 4x12's?

do you guys like them? I have heard they are dark but I cant remember the last time I played through one.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

I dig em a lot, actually. Nice match to the head.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

Well, the only thing I've played through my 5150 cab is the 5150 head that I got with it. They are a perfect match. And from what I hear, the 5150 cab is the best bet for matching up with a 5150 head. To the people I've talked to, the 5150 head just doesn't sound right unless it's going through a 5150 cab.

Now as far as matching up a 5150 cab with a different head, I can't help you there. All I can say is that it is a high quality cab and sounds good to me.

well I have a Peavey Triumph 120 head which is all tube. I've been looking for a Peavey Cab to go with it.

anyway I went in the local used guitar/gear store today and they had an old 5150 cab. I was thinking of picking it up friday if I have any money and Its still there.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

Take your head in and try it out first. It shoudn't be a problem unless the guys at the store have something against making a sale. They should understand that you need to test it out with your gear before throwing down the coin.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

The 5150 head into the 5150 cab nails the Carnal Knowledge tone. I prefer the 5150 head into a JCM 900 cab, though; it has been some time since I played one, but if IIRC the 5150 was brighter than my 900.

The 5150 cab has a unique voice. I would definitely test it with your amp head prior to buying.

Good luck!

Re: 5150 Cabs?

I think if its still around Friday or saturday and I have some money I'll buy it.

no doubt it will sound better then the POS cab I have now.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

I love the 5150's..... I have an early 5150 stack... The cab must be from the first year of issue... I got it in 1996-ish and it had been on tour with a few bands and had seen better days then.... I use an early 5150 head and a Classic 50 head thru the 5150 cab.... I even use my Godin's Piezo bridge thru the C50's clean channel into the 5150 cab..... love it!

LOL.....The 5150 head in to the 5150 cab IS the Carnal Knowledge tone.....LOL.

Those cabs are really nice. I like the tone from them. Wish I had the cab when I owned the head. It still sounded good through the old Music Man cab though.

Well, yeah it is!

It's that I was literally shocked at how well I could replicate his tone with the 5150 half stack. I'm used to other players saying that he didn't use them, or that the guts of the 5150's were ripped out and thrown away, etc. The point is that they really do get that tone. :smokin:

Now that is funny. The ones who say he didn't use them or otherwise are the ones who still think that he uses some magic box backstage that nobody knows about...LOL. I have a magazine somewhere from the Carnal Knowledge time frame that shows what the settings on his amp where. I was glad I kept it because when I got the head, I dialed those settings in and was floored. Granted I wasn't running it through a 5150 cab but the tone was incredible. Sometimes I wish I still had that amp, very little though anymore.

Re: 5150 Cabs?

i found the 5150 cabs a tad dark on its own but not too bad. however one of the best setups i ever used was a peavey ultra plus head into 1 5150 cab and 1 marshall 1960(whatever) cab loaded with vintage 30s. it was the perfect ballance of sounds. thus why i got my splawn cab with the x pattern of eminence speakers to get as close as i could to that sound without moving around 2 4x12 cabs.

The F.U.C.K. album was recorded mostly with a Soldano amp..... But the 5150 has that albums sound built in for sure!

True, he did use an SLO I think on most of that one but he did use the 5150 prototype some of the tracks as well. If I remember correctly, the tone he was looking for was a combination of his old Super Lead and the Soldano.
