5150 head vs. butchered 5150 combo

I notice the combo 5150's are hundreds less that their head counterparts. I'm getting the idea of getting a combo and making it into a head. Anybody have insight on if this is possible and if the combo sounds just as good as the head? I have no idea what I'm getting myself into with this.

Why convert the combo into a head? If you've got a cabinet, why not run it along with the combo speakers?

I have 2 cabs....and sheffields hurt.

Can't you just disconnect the speakers from the combo and run both cabinets without butchering tha amp? That way, if you ever want/neet to sell it, you'll have an easier time.

Room. Touring musician. If I don't need it, I'll get rid of it. Those combo's weigh a TON too.

Well the combo is more expensive than the head when buying new. The combo is probably cheaper used because it's extremly heavy and cumbersome and maybe because a 5150 just doesn't sound right through 2x12(most recordings and live stuff where done with 4x12s or even full stacks) and people are disappointed by what it sounds like.
I wouldn't butcher a combo. The head is built like a tank and same goes for the combo, the problem might be that a butchered combo might be not half a s solid as a head. I'd go for the head, especially with two cabs available.

If it's just the space you're concerned with, I would say that your best bet would be to find a head for a decent price. They really are built like a tank and pretty much everything else Loserchief said is dead on.

Not worth it, IMO - they're voiced differently, and you can find 5150's super cheap if you look hard enough.

There's one on my local craigslist for $600, actually.

damn, i forgot about the voicing(played both head and combo when on my last amp hunt). Wasn't the combo voiced a little darke to compensate for the smaller format?

If it sounds darker, that's because of the sheffields. It's actually voiced closer to the 5150II than the 5150.

Would that not be desirably? Money is an issue. I'm not in a hurry to get rid of my Attax but it'll be a millenia before I get enough for a head if gas keeps rising.

Since when are the heads more expensive? I've been watching the combos go for $700-$800...

Seen a few heads get down to the $500 range that just needed a new pot.

No - the II's gain sound isn't as ballsy. It's got more of a twang to it, and is voiced with less punch in the low end.
